Well the title pretty much states it. I'm looking into buying a Dobyns rod for fishing a jig. Dont know if I want the 734 or the 704? Any suggestions or opinions.I am having a very hard time finding a store that carries them that is within a reasonable driving distance so I can actually handle one and put a reel on it. So any input will help. Thanks.

You would be much better off if you posted this thread in the Rods, Reels, and Line forum.

Sorry. I was trying to help you get the most answers. Figured the 4 Sale forum wasn't the best place to ask for opinions.

As for the 734, it is a rod I would like to have based on what I've read. Suppose to be a great all-around rod. Any opinion I would give on the rod would all be hearsay. Give me some time and maybe I can answer that question from experience! :) Cabela's had one for $200 (a Champion) when I was there last weekend. Best if I don't go back to Cabela's for awhile!

i have a 734c rod and i think it is an okay rod. i dont very like it that much when im using bottom contact lures because it has a soft tip which feels weird to me since i like a stiffer tip for bottom contact lure. but this rod excel great when throwing small plastic swimbaits like basstrix. this is when the rod works best for me.

Hey thanks for getting this post into the correct forum. I realized it was in the wrong place after I posted it. What I am learning from this post and some others I have on other boards it sounds like the 704 would be the way to go for a jig rod.Looking forward to geting one. Thanks everyone.

How heavy a jig, and in what kind of cover are you planning to fish? Personally I wouldn't go over 1/2 oz with a 4-power Dobyns, and for heavy cover, the 5-power may be a better bet.

I like my 734 use it for jigs and plastics 3/8oz + plastic very suited for this task.

I've been pleased with my 734 for jigs... not quite as sensitive as my 793 NRX, but then again it shouldn't be. You'll love the rod.

The 734 is an excellent rod, but just not for weighted bottom contact presentations. It's better used as a moving bait rod for spinners, buzzers, chatterbaits, heavy lipless cranks and wakebaits, paddle tail swimbaits, etc. String one up and put a big bend in it. You'll see that it's a little more moderate than most "fast action" rods on the rack.

I do fish 5-7" Senkos on it once in a while, but I'm not a fan of it for worms and jigs. Even a 1/4 oz jig fishes better on a 735 in my opinion, but that's mainly because the stiffer tip on the 735 allows me to snap the bait free of weeds with just a little pop that doesn't move the bait very far. Give the 735 a look. I love that rod for jigging and worming. The 734 and 735 are my most frequently used rods.
