I am buying more bc setups and starting to wonder what am I going to use my spinning setup for? I have my plastics rod, my crankin rod and my spinnerbait rod. The only thing i have been using it for is topwaters and weightless soft plastics like senkos or fat ikas. I think spinning rods are becoming unpopular. Do yall use a spinning setup at all?

Yup. Daiwa Cielo MH/Advantage 2000/30 lb. braid, old Berkley Lightning/420SS Penn/ 4 lb. Trilene XL.

I still fish for more than bass. :o:P:lol:

But like you I am trying to go baitcasting gear for everything I can. Rest of my old spinning gear has been given to my grandsons. Now if I could just get them interested in fishing again!

Spinning tackle excels in finesse applications like you mentioned. You can get away with using all casting or all spinning but you may not always be using the best tool for every application. Being proficient with both types of tackle enhances the fishing experience IMO. To each his own, but neither style will eclipse the other any time soon.

I have both spinning and casting setups as well with a setup on both sides for some techniques. I have a a lipped crankbait setup in both casting and spinning and some other technigues as well. I fish from the shore and in close quarters my spinning setups are out with me more often than my casting setups. I agree with DVT that neither will eclipse the other as its a matter of preference and comfort level with either one.

You are way off base about spinning combo's becoming unpopular.

I prefer baitcasting gear and find myself using it for techniques that I used to do with spinning gear, e.g. many weightless plastics. With that said I rarely have a trip that I don't use spinning gear at some point. For light line and baits it is an essential part of my arsenal.

Watch a Bassmasters Elite event and you will almost always find a few pros using spinning gear. It may not be popular, but it is sometimes necessary in my opinion.

If you start fishing for smallmouth you will think twice about using your bc. Spinning can get you more distance with lighter line and lighter weight lures . Plus the fight on spinning is I think much more fun than a bcer. jmho

It comes down to having the "right tool for the job"

Spinning gear has techniques it excels at, while baitcaster's have their own techniques. This does not mean they absolutely cannot do what the other setup can do, but knowing the benefits of each type and being comfortable with each will have benefits.

I fish a small lake 26acres 3-4 times a week and hardly see any orher person with a baitcaster. I use both types routinely and dont really have a preference. Last 3 reels bought were spinning but next will be BC. I have been asked a numbers of times "you using a baitcaster those are difficult to use arent they?" The 3 co-workers I go fishing with all use spinning they dont have BC. So I dont see spinning being unpopular at all.

I have 5 spinning outfits for plastics, cranks, topwaters and jigs. That's in addition to my casting outfits.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many of the baits we don't add weight to are for from "weightless". A 5" senko is dense and plenty heavy enough to cast without lead. Other plastics just wouldn't handle nearly as well. Here in the north we are often dealing with cold clear water and not as big of fish as in the south. You may not have as much need for finesse gear as we do, but small baits and light line can fool some real hawgs.

FWIW, a 5" Senko weighs roughly the same as a 7" Power Worm, 3/0 EWG hook, and 1/8 oz. bullet weight...~3/8 oz.

There are some very experienced fishermen on this site that only use spinning gear.

I totally agree with Stratos Joe. I can't even imagine not applying spinning rods in smallmouth fishing. They excel at presentations for grubs, tubes, small jerkbaits and especially drop shot. For largemouth, skipping a tube under docks and shakey heads or waky worms. New small diameter braid has opened the door for more applications.. Spinning is for real. Options options options.

I also tend to pick up a baitcaster more often than not.

I just can't stand how many problems I have with line twist, even using all the preventative measures I've read on here. It's just something I tend to hate dealing with, so I find myself using BC's for just about everything. Even went through the torture of learning to skip with a BC.

But, I still have three good spinning setups. If nothing else, my girlfriend or friends use them. I generally have one of them tied up with an 1/8oz weight and a baby rage craw ready to pickup though.

Dude ask Fish Chris what he thinks about BCs, the man has caught more 10+ pounders than all of us together with spinning gear.

I use baitcaster more than I do spinning rods but I wouldn't even think about going fishing without a spinning rod. Shakeyheads, dropshots, wacky rigging, swimming a grub, skipping a tube, light cranks and jerks, all things I use a spinning combo for.

I never said I will not use a spinning rod. I know they can be applied to every approach there is to catching a bass and that some use strictly spinning gear. I have seen and heard more now than ever that people are buying and using Baitcasters for everything now including fishing weightless. Like i mentioned, i use mine for weightless and topwater lures. Just curious if there were some who are strictly bc users.

As far as becoming less popular i do believe that. All the advertisements i see are geared towards BC reels. Maybe its just me. I caught my pb on a weightles senko on my spinning setup I would never hit the lake without it.

I can only think of one television ad I've seen for fishing reels and it was the Abu Revo Premier spinning reel. Now I could be wrong but that one stands out and I'm sure there are some others.
