Seriously though, I like to flip and pitch a jig to wood cover in shallow water. I usually match my trailers to my jig color. I do this year round. Recently I have been fishing them in deeper water just slowly dragging it along the bottom on a rocky point. Hamby Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 A jig is one of those lures that i can fish in a foot of water or in deep water. I can fish it slow, i can fish it fast. When it comes to buying lures in bulk, jigs and suitable trailers are really the only thing i buy many of. I buy many different types of plastics to use as a trailer. From big bulky things like brush hogs, all the way down to 4 inch senkos. The color combinations vary just as much also. One color i do well on a pitching jig is a red and black jig with a green pumpkin trailer. It doesn't have to match. Quote

I've caught jigs every way imaginable and at all times of the year and in any condition imaginable. Jigs do a great job imitating something that a fish would naturally eat and you can get a jig to places that the fish live. As for matching the trailer, you don't have to match it at all. Sometimes a mismatched jig and trailer catches more than a matching combo. I found when I was learning how to fish a jig that the hardest part of learning it was actually getting myself to pick it up and fish with it. Quote

As others have mentioned, there really is no correct way to fish them. What's the best time of year? January thru December. I'm not trying to be funny, but jigs excel in any season. That doesn't mean that they will give you lightning in a bottle everytime out, but you can fish them year round. How do you match the trailer to the jig? Trailers for jigs are only limited to your imagination. Heck, I've caught a 5 lber (which is a big bass for my region) on a naked jig (no trailer). About the only other concern you should have is picking the right jig head and weight for your particular fishing application. Now go out an catch some fish and be sure to post some pics... Quote

I also do well with slowly dragging football jigs around and over brush piles and timber. My best colors are Black/Blue, Green Pumpkin, and Peanut Butter & Jelly. Jigs are one of my favorite baits to fish because I catch a TON of bass on them. Hope this helps! Quote
Fat-G Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I fish them year-round, no doubt. Winter, spring, and fall are my best times. Not so much in the summer, unless it's overcast, raining, or cooler. I like Northstar jigs and my other favorite is GMAN jigs. I usually throw Rage Craws on the back, but Chigger Craws, Paca Craws, and Shaw Grigsby Craws work well when they want a subtle presentation. Quote
