endless Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Wow Allot of nice setups. Good lord Deep 80# braid. Your not playing are you. One of mine is 6'8 M-XF Carbonlite, Pflueger Supreme 8035MG, 10# XPS Carbongold. My shaky head setup. Quote
Super User deep Posted October 26, 2011 Super User Posted October 26, 2011 Good lord Deep 80# braid. Your not playing are you. Ahh, but 80 lb Samurai has the diameter of 17 lb mono line. I don't care if the actual test strength is 80 or 50 or even 17 lb. I need a low stretch line with a diameter of 15-20 lb mono. Plus, because the shock resistance of braid is low due to the low stretch, a higher test strength helps against casting off baits on backlashes. I learnt to use braid + leader for swimbaits from a post Matt Allen made on his website. He uses 80 lb Power Pro, which probably has a larger diameter than 80 lb Samurai. But of course, he throws bigger baits on a bigger reel. One of mine is 6'8 M-XF Carbonlite, Pflueger Supreme 8035MG, 10# XPS Carbongold. My shaky head setup. Sounds like a nice set-up, especially the reel. Carbonlites are great rods I understand, especially if we believe what Clary says JK I'm almost running out of setups to post, but here's my cranking combo. Pinnacle Perfecta 7'8" MH cranking rod, Citica 201B5 12 lb Sufix Siege. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 26, 2011 Super User Posted October 26, 2011 One of mine is 6'8 M-XF Carbonlite, Pflueger Supreme 8035MG, 10# XPS Carbongold. My shaky head setup. On the bang for the buck-o-meter, I give this an 8. You can probably fish a heluva lot more than just shaky heads with it as well. St. Croix Avid AVS63MLXF Shimano CI4 2500 Invisx 6# What and why: for vertical drop shot in 15 feet or more water with zero cover. The rod is short, helps keep my bait in the cone when in 200 kHz mode on both the kayak and bass boat, is perfect for detecting tiny "lift" and "pressure" bites you get from stingy smallmouth, the line is thin enough to get additional bites, and strong enough for tough smallies. it is stretchier than others, but that's good when you get a strong fish on a short leash by the boat. The reel has an upgraded Carbontex drag, set up wet. I really appreciate the rapid line pickup that the 6:1 ratio offers. I think it's 34 IPT or something close. All in all, a joy to use. Good enough for the avatar fish, a 5 lb. 12 oz. Erie smallie. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted October 26, 2011 Super User Posted October 26, 2011 Nice setup, J. I'd say 8.5 for the rod, 9.5 for the reel, and 9.5 for the line, for an overall average of 9.17 Since you did your drop shot setup, I'll do mine, which is similar: Rod: 6' 8" Shimano Cumara M XFast Reel: Shimano Stradic Ci4 2500 Line: 8lb Seaguar Invizx Quote
KSRonH Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Shane, I'm not real familar with the Shimamo Products, but probably a 9 on hear say. My dropshot setup is a St Croix LTBS69MLXF, Abu Soron STX20 filled with 8# Nanofil. But a fav of mine is my Gloomis MBR843, Revo Premier and 12# Gamma. I love fishing this with a 5/16 oz Jewel jig and a Net Bait Baby Craw. Quote

ChiCityBasser Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 These are my two current use crankbait setups. I use them for shallow to mid diver cranks and 1/4 oz spinnerbaits as well as small jerkbaits and topwaters on occasion. Reel has tons of drag to pull them from the slop and rod has enough backbone to handle the job without being clunky. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted October 26, 2011 Super User Posted October 26, 2011 No one rated my cranking set-up. 8.5 of ten. The Citica is still a workhorse of a reel, and the Pinnacle rod is seriously under-rated. Another Crank rig, then, shall we? Lamiglas SR705 Calais DC 10# Tatsu Quote

Love the reel, rod is not my cup of tea, never used that line. My cranking set up: Rod: St Croix Legend Tournament 7'11" H power/Mod action "Magnum Cranker" Reel: Shimano Curado 201DPV Line: Power Pro 20lb braid, I'll use 10lb Trilene 100% fluoro as a leader when I am around rocks/zebe's, but straight braid when ripping big cranks out of deep grass. Great bang for the buck Reel: 7/10 Never been a fan of BPS reels, but alot of people say good thing about the current PQ Line: 8/10 Tried and true line, not cutting edge/top of the line stuff, but not junk either. This is probably my favorite combo to use: Rod: St Croix Legend Tournament 7' M power/fast action "Teaser" Reel: Shimano Curado 51E Line: 20lb Power pro, will use a 12lb Trilene 100% flouro leader when needed.
