I ordered a 7'1 MH recon rod model 714. I thought the 4 indicated a 4 power rod which was MH. The 715 is a 7'1 H power rod. I thought the 5 indicated a heavy rated rod. Now I want to buy the 7'6 H hut the model number is 766. My question is what does the 6 indicate? Is it a heavier power or maybe different taper. Any info would be much appreciated.

I understand that ,but the 715 and 766 are both rated as heavy power fast action rods. So my question was what is the difference between 5 and 6 power.

i too have been looking into the recon rods (tho spinning model) and they seem to have a pretty odd rating system for their powers, the 691s is listed on their site as a "light" (listed as a ML on tackle warehouse) but rated for 1/16-3/8oz baits, which would be a ML or even a M in some other line-ups.

as for your question, i would assume the 5 is a heavy and the 6 is a little bit heavier heavy (ie. if it were a loomis rod, maybe listed as a "mag-heavy?) not heavy enough to be an extra heavy but a bit more than a standard heavy. on a guess on my part though, i dont own any of their stuff (yet?) or anything over a MH rod, sorry!

Sorry, I misunderstood which 6 you were referring to. There are no industry standards for rod ratings, it's all subjective on the part of the manufacturer. I would expect the longer rod to have a similar taper but ending with a larger butt diameter due to the increased length resulting in a little more power. It's not unheard of for different rods from the same manufacturer to be classifed as "Heavy"... Phenix has a pretty strong following on the west coast and a good rep with custom builders on their blanks.

Thanks for trying to help, but we can't seem to get on the same page. Let me try to explain my question better. If 1=L , 2=ML , 3=M , 4= MH across the entire line shouldn't 5=H regardless if the rod is 1 foot or 50 feet?

You would think so, wouldn't you?

Like DVT said, there is no standard. I haven't looked at those particular rod's specs, but I would look at the line and lure weight ratings. If you already have a rod from that series, you can make a judgment on power and action, based on your needs.

What you can't do is try to compare rods from different series, or even worse, different manufacturers.

I see your point and logic would dictate that but only the manufacturer can answer with certainty. The ratings being subjective and arbitrary only allow us to guess. I think it's a safe assumption that their 766 model has more power (and happens to be longer)than the 715. Some companies would call a rod capable of throwing 2 1/2 oz baits XHvy. In the Ultra MBX line, 703XH is rated for 3/8-1 1/2 oz lures and 10-30 lb line. At the end of the day, I'm afraid rod preferences will boil down to trial and error. At least you'll have something to compare to once the first rod arrives.

I have the first rod already. It's the 714 and I like it a lot. However its a little under powered in my opinion which leads me to believe the 764 will be too light for froging even here in NY, but I have a feeling the 6 may be too powerful. This is driving me crazy though if they just made the model number 765 I would have already bought it. Maybe I will anyway. I think this rod could be exactly what I need to rekindle my love that I lost for my zillion. Anyway thanks for the help DVT it is appreciated. Maybe ill try calling phenix. If I get an answer ill post back for anyone who cares.

Can you post what's the weight of the 714 rod ? How's the balance, is it same feel as the phenix UMBX ? I'm planning to get one if it is as light and balances like the UMBX model

Thanks.

I can't compare it to the umbx or any phenix rod for that matter. This is my first and I'm very impressed. As far as weight goes I do not have a scale to way it with, but it is very light. It's tough to tell in hand but it feels to be lighter than my 7'2 cumara. It also balaces a little better at approximately 3in from the center of the reel seat with a 6.8 oz reel. The tip is soft and works great for weightless plasctics or light t- rigs. It would also do a good job pitching but I think it may be too soft for something like dragging a 1/2 oz football head. Also the fast action is not as fast a the cumara similar to my cabelas XML. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks, I think I know how you describe it since I also have the cumara and the cabelas xml. The new Phenix recon and the UMBX are using different material for the blanks so i'm guessing that the recon has a slower action than the umbx from how you describe it. I might need to go to the nearest local shop here in SOCAL and check it out.

Thanks again.
