Super User senile1 Posted October 17, 2011 Super User Posted October 17, 2011 The Cardinals are in the Series again. On August 25th they were 10 1/2 games behind the best second place team in the National League at the time, the Atlanta Braves. They passed the Braves on the last day of the season and ended up 6 behind division winner, Milwaukee, grabbing the wild-card slot. Now they have knocked off the Phillies and the Brewers to make it to the Fall Classic. The Texas Rangers are a very good team and have not lost consecutive games in almost two months. The Cardinals will have their hands full. I hope they can pull off another upset but starting pitching will have to be better. Their much maligned bullpen pitchers have pitched magnificently in the playoffs so far and were the instrumental factor in winning the NLCS. Quote
Sfritr Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Living now in Cincinnati and having just moved from Michigan I am going to have to root for the Rangers.. They put on a hitting clinic against my Tigers and I cannot tolerate Tony Larussa. Go Rangers!!! It would be great to see Nolan Get one. He was always the poster child for hard work and grit. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 17, 2011 Author Super User Posted October 17, 2011 I have always had tremendous respect for Nolan Ryan and for his abilities when he played. Who knows what kind of won-loss record he could have had if he had played for good teams during his career. Having said that, I'm a Cardinal fan, born and bred. I hope they have another rabbit to pull out of their hat. They will need it because that Texas Rangers team looks pretty tough right now and they are definitely on a roll. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 17, 2011 Super User Posted October 17, 2011 I am a life-long Cardinal fan, and this season is one of the most surprising of them all to this point. They should not have made the playoffs. That they did and have beaten two very good teams to get to the Series is crazy. Even crazier is they have a great chance of winning the thing. They've made a believer out of me. Sfritr, not liking Tony puts you in good company. Many in St. Louis call for his head regularly (although none right now ). He does things his way, and some of his decisions are hard to understand. We've had some very good players that could not play for him. With that said, his record speaks for itself. I'll take my chances with him calling the shots. Only time will tell if the Redbirds can go all the way. I would not bet against them. Go Cards! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Go Cards!!! I cant believe the actually made it. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 17, 2011 Super User Posted October 17, 2011 This should be a hitters world series. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted October 18, 2011 Super User Posted October 18, 2011 Go Rangers! Rangers are due to a win.We came too close too many times and then lose it. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 18, 2011 Super User Posted October 18, 2011 I like the Rangers, and if they were playing anyone other than the Cards I would be cheering for them. Truth is I feel the Cards are playing with house money; if the Rangers beat them I will be disappointed, but not like other times in the past (KC in 85 still makes me a little sick thinking about it) where we expected to win. We in Cardinal Nation understand all too well that getting there and winning it all are not the same. The Rangers have put together a great team that should win it this year, but they have to beat a good Cardinal team that is hot and has been tested by fire...it should be a great Series. Quote

Captain Obvious Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 This should be a hitters world series. Hitters Battle? More like a battle of the bullpens. As a rule bats are suppose to go cold in the playoffs and pitching dominates. But as a rule your seventh hitter isn't suppose to set playoff records ether. This will be the series where the team winning after 5 innings will win the game because both bullpens are pitching great. Then again the Rangers lineup might remind the Cards how bad their bullpen was at the beginning of the season? I got a 6 pack of Shiner Bock iced down, can't wait to get this party started. Go Rangers!!! Let the dynasty begin!!! Quote

Super User senile1 Posted October 23, 2011 Author Super User Posted October 23, 2011 How about Pujols last night? He tied the record for most hits in a World Series game which was 5 by Paul Molitor in 1982. He tied the record for home runs in a World Series game by hitting 3 which was also done twice by Babe Ruth, and once by Reggie Jackson. He tied the record for RBIs in a World Series Game shared by two other players. And he set the record for total bases of 14 in his 5 hits. He was asked if this was his greatest game and he stated that he wouldn't be able to say that unless the Cardinals win the Series. I agree with his attitude. Quote
BassThumb Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Cards 16 Rangers 7. Enough said. That came on the heels of two pitchers duels. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 24, 2011 Super User Posted October 24, 2011 It was sure about pitching tonight. Another great game. We play best two of three for all the marbles. Go Cards! Quote
Captain Obvious Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 How about Derek Holland (i.e. The Dutch Oven)tonight!!!! Nothing makes you rethink how "great" the Cardinal offense is than watching them get only two hits tonight. And the Cowboys beat the C*** out of the Rams. Tomorrow night decides this series. GO RANGERS!!!! Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 24, 2011 Super User Posted October 24, 2011 Captain your man Holland pitched a gem. Do not let your euphoria convince you that the Card's offense is anything but great. Our pitching has been suspect at times and our defense hasn't always good, but we will score some runs... Celebrating beating the Rams must be like kissing your sister...not much joy in it. 1 Quote

GO RANGERS!!!! Derek Holland was awesome tonight. I suspected after the first two innings that it was going to be a long night for the Cardinals. Regarding your second sentence, I'm not sure if that was in response to my post about Pujols or the post following, but just for the record, bragging about Pujols night had nothing to do with talking about the "great" Cardinals offense. Pujols is Pujols. Whether he plays for the Cardinals, the Rangers, or a last place team, he is still one of the greatest players to ever play the game. That cannot be denied, and his night in the third game was one for the ages. Objectively, who he is playing for is irrelevant . I'm not sure what the Cowboys and Rams game has to do with the World Series either. I live in Kansas City and I'm a fan of the lowly Chiefs anyway. I grew up in the southeast corner of the state and was always a Cardinals fan, for both baseball and football. Thank goodness, the football Cardinals moved to Arizona in the 80s or I would probably still be rooting for them. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Cool down guys I was not attacking "The Machine" Pujols he is one of the best in the game no doubt about it. I was just saying that the cards offense wasn't 16 runs good like game 3. What I meant was that without the Rangers subpar defense that game and the blown call at first I don't think there is any way the Cards score that many runs. They were "helped" by bad pitching, very bad defenseANDa blown call. No disrespect meant to the Cards offense in any way. And the Cowboys beating the Rams was more of a joke, it meant nothing what so every and I know that. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 25, 2011 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2011 The Rangers are on the cusp of winning their first World Series. The Cardinals seemed to be in "choke" mode last night going 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. I think Washington managed a good game but I disagreed with some of the decisions by the Cardinals. I am not a La Russa hater but once in awhile he does over-think things and it can lead to some bizarre decisions. If you didn't see the game check out this article. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/tom_verducci/10/25/game.5/index.html Hopefully, the Cardinals can recover in St Louis, but as I stated in the first post of this thread no one has beaten the Rangers in back to back games in approximately two months. Their backs are against the wall. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 28, 2011 Super User Posted October 28, 2011 Man, tonights game has to be one of the best game 6 games ever. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 28, 2011 Super User Posted October 28, 2011 Craziest game I think I've ever seen. The Rangers should be drinking champaign right now. They are a team and a franchise that deserves to win. Instead they have to be wondering what happened. Hollywood could not have scripted Freese booting a routine a pop up allowing a run, then coming back to be the hero-twice! The Cards have done this magic act for a couple of months now. They think they can win in any situation-maybe they can. Should be fun tomorrow. Go Cards! Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted October 28, 2011 Super User Posted October 28, 2011 Man, tonights game has to be one of the best game 6 games ever. No doubt, freakin' epic. As much as I hate the cards, it was a fantastic ballgame. I am getting tired of hearing about how the cards made the playoffs. All attention is on them and their 'magical' Sept, though the media forgets it took a historic collapse by Atlanta for the St.L to win the wildcard. Oh yea, they forget to mention the cards' Sept series against Cinci, Pitt, the Mets, Cubs and Astros. Quote

No one, including those of us who support them win or lose, gave them any chance. They won anyway. They then beat two powerful teams to get to the Series. No one gave them a chance of beating Philly or the Brewers. They won anyway. Now they are going to game 7. After tonights game "magical" seems about right. They continue to win when they have to. Love them or hate them, that is what champions do. 1 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted October 28, 2011 Author Super User Posted October 28, 2011 That was a wild game and it will be one that is remembered. Here's to two great, but blemished teams, making this a World Series to remember. Quote
bassman31783 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 As a lifetime Rangers fan last night killed me....but what a game. Most exciting/stressful game I've ever seen. I'm afraid that last night was our only chance. I don't like our chances tonight at all to be honest esp. with there being a small chance that both Cruz and Napoli don't play from last nights injuries. I'm sure they will, they'll just be hurting. What a fantastic World Series. Which ever team wins clearly deserves it. Neither team will give in or give up. It really is a shame that there are so many people not watching it because it's not the Yankees, Phillies or Red Sox. Heres to one more game. Make it another classic. Quote
