jignfule Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Ours opened up yesterday here in Idaho. We did well on local ducks and geese. Probably time to put up the bass gear for a while. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 18, 2011 Global Moderator Posted October 18, 2011 I don't chase ducks until deer season closes in January if I hunt them at all. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted October 21, 2011 Super User Posted October 21, 2011 Early teal was spectacular here in South Florida, but I was laid out with back issues, looking forward to the mid November opening Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Opens November 19th here and I cant wait. I have about 600 decoys to tie up between now and then. Quote

Bass_Fanatic Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 600 decoys? I thought my four dozen was a lot! I hunt on Catahoula Lake. The entire lake is about 2 1/2 feet deep with wild oats growing in it. It is one of, if not the best duck hunting lake in America. The downfall to that is that there are blinds every 275 yards apart across the lake. There must be between 600-700 blinds on the lake. You have to have atleast 500 decoys to compete out there. It gets expensive and time consuming, but its well worth the 476 ducks I killed out there last year. Quote

preach4bass Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 We've killed 8 woodies, a green-winged teal, and a goose so far this week. Been trying to get the mallards, but that ain't happening, so tomorrow morning we're going to unleash on our woody hole. Sounds like we need to find a place like Fanatic! By the way, what are you hunting down there? Is there a particular dominant species, or is it mixed? Quote

Woodducks, teal, and just about any kind of duck in between. BTW, Fanatic and I are from the same neck of the woods and yes it is an amazing place to be during duck season. Although I hunt about 10 miles north of the lake in a cypress swamp and it was dry as a bone last year and its not looking very good this year. Its a little more wet than last year but not enough for us to hunt at our hole. KINNA LOOKIN FOR SOMEONE TO HUNT WITH ON THE MAIN LAKE. "hint" "hint" Josh....... j/k If we get a couple nice rains, maybe we can hunt our hole this year. I'm praying hard! Quote

Like Dalton said, a ton of pintails, good number of mallards, weigons, gadwalls, ringneck, teal, redheads, woodies, and canvasback. I read a DU study a few years ago that said 80% of the canvasback in north america can be found on Catahoula lake during December/January. Your limit of cans are pretty much a gimmie everyday. Quote

My number is 318-787-7232 call me up if you need an extra limit one day next week. After next week I'll be headed back to Tech but will probably be making many trips in on the weekend. If we get a good rain sunday or tuesday like they are calling for, I may be able to hunt my hole next week a little bit. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Unbelievable. Do you guide? Haha funny you ask that question. I've thought about starting a guide service the past couple of years, but I havent pulled the trigger on it yet. I bring a lot of random people out there so I should start charging something instead of giving free hunts . I just enjoy watching others have a good hunt. Im actually taking the coordinator for DU this year. I met him at the ramp a couple weeks ago and he got my number to come and make a hunt this year. If anyone wants a hunt I'll be happy to take ya. I'll keep yall updated on how we are doin and if anyone is ever in the area we can hook up and shoot some ducks. My phone number in 318-308-5818 and the name is Josh. Quote

Bass_Fanatic Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Well I made my first 2 hunts of the year. Saturday it took us 2 hours to kill our 5 man limit (30 ducks). We had a mix bag of mallards, pintails, gadwalls, a weigon, ring-necks, canvasback, scaup, and redheads. Went to church on Sunday and hunted again this morning. It took us 2 hours to kill a 3 man limit (18 ducks). Same type of mixed bag. There are ducks everywhere. Its been good so far for me thats for sure. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Went again today...had a 4 man limit (24 ducks) on the water by 9:00. 9 Gadwalls, 5 Green-Wing Teal, 2 Blue-Wing Teal, 1 Woody, 3 Ring-Neck, 4 Spoonies. Quote

Sounds like you guys are doing good. Saturday I went with a guy out to cocodrie. We killed our six man limit of 36 and then went back the next day, it was pretty foggy and only killed 13. Went out on Saline monday to my uncles spot with him and some three other guys and killed 26. Tuesday went to Green Tree and killed ten before the rain set in really hard, and yesterday I went to Catahoula to Collin Camack's blind and only killed three Canvasback. There were a few ducks flying but the north wind was blowing and they had no intentions of landing of the Southeast side of the lake. Other than those three canvas back we've been killing some pretty good ducks. few green heads, wigeon, gadwall, pintail, lots of teal on opening day, and a few spooneys. I was surprised by green tree, i had never been in there till the other day and we didn't do half bad. I may go back out there tomorrow morning. BTW do you hunt on the north or south end? Quote

I have 2 blinds right off of the right side of the canal and one between the canal and French fork. Sorry I havent called u for a hunt, but my dad doesnt have water yet either so Ive been taking him and my brother. But it sounds like yall have been bustin em pretty good. We killed 14 more yesterday and I went to a small cypress lake (Hog Lake) this morning and got 8 in like an hour and a half. I got a few good reports this morning from Catahoula tho so Ill be back out there tomorrow and probably Saturday. Good luck to yall...DROP DUCKS LIKE RAIN!! Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Killed 18 more this morning. That makes 112 in less than a week! Quote

Iv never duck hunted iv thought of going but no one in my family likes duck. Duck is great! I just got done eating three breasts, which is a hearty serving for me, but I'm sure a lot of people would eat more at one sitting. A lot of duck hunters have a big feed and cook a few dozen to a few hundred at one time. Also, every big hunter I know has a few people they keep in meat. I duck and deer hunt a little bit, but really love to squirrel hunt. Ironically, squirrel is the only game I don't have a taste for. I've killed 48 so far this season, and easily gave them away to families who were very appreciative. Quote
