Dan Weldon, the 2011 Indy 500 champ, died today in the Indy Championship race in a catastrophic 15-car wreck. The driver's unanimously decided to end the race, and instead do a 5-lap, 3-wide tribute to Dan. All the crews and teams lined the race track shoulder-to-shoulder, many in tears, as the field slowly paraded around the track.

Truly a sad day in racing.

That crash was absolutely insane. He will be greatly missed. My dad was friends with him and talked to him often. He was a great guy.

How freakin' sad. RIP Dan.

From what I've been hearing, sounds like he was a legend in the making

I think so. I talked to him a couple of times when I was with my dad. Really cool guy.

My prayers are with his family and friends, and may he rest in peace, but that freak crash we knew would come at one point or another, and we've all feared would come. You cant go 225 MPH around a 1 1/2 mile oval in super light, not so protective Indy Cars and not expect what happened to never happen. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often to be frank. They're basically strapped to an aerodynamic gas tank.

Once I knew he passed my heart sank. RIP Dan Wheldon.

I am shocked there were not more injuries in that wreck. The one fortunate thing is he most likely died on impact and did not suffer.

RIP Mr. Weldon
