Whenever i spool my baitcasters the line tends to fill up more on one side than the other. I usually thread the line through the first guide, through the reels eye and tie onto the spool and wind it up. Am i doing something wrong? By the time im done theres always more line on the left side of the spool than the right. I keep tension on the line when spooling as well. Im not sure why this happens.

After you spool it on, tie it to something fixed, like a tree or fence, and walk it way back, then re-reel it back onto the spool. At the same time run the line through a rag soaked with Line and Lure Conditioner (just because the stuff is awesome). That should fix you right up.

So basically youre saying to spool it up, then unspool it, then spool it again? How will that help it go on evenly? Why dont i just ue the line and lure conditioner when i iniitally spool it?

My Citica spools unevenly sometimes as well.

What I do to get it to spool straight, is actually hold the line in front of the reel, and follow the level-wind back and forth. Generally, I exaggerate it a little, and go farther outside on each side than I need to, and it will actually fill into each side of the spool better.

Only bad thing is, if it spools uneven, it will probably keep doing it even when fishing. I noticed with my Citica that if I'm fishing a spinnerbait or something, holding the rod off to the side, the resistance bends the rod a little and the line rides to one side of the guides and end up spooling unevenly, over and over again so long as I keep holding the rod that way.

He is basically saying that, but, when you tie it to something with a bit of added tension it will help it feed correctly. Make sure when your reeling the line on the reel that your holding your reel flat. It may not seem like much, but having the left side turned down will sometimes result in more line on the left side and less on the right and the reverse if you hold it down to the right.....its a gravity thing :P

You can use that in your favor too, if you have more on the left side, hold your right side plate to the ground and keep spooling up until its back to even.

The best method I use it similar to tying off to a tree or post aftr spooling up... but just works easier. You can use a rag with line conditioner like this too. But, make sure your line is going between the pages of a book, and stack a couple books on top of it so you have constant steady pressure. Keep your reel facing the line and keep it flat. If you still have issues, You probably have made your knot on the spool too big. (you can tape the line on the spool and this may help that problem) OR- you may have something catching in your worm gear.

Considering that the there's no issue with the reel, un even spooling happens:

1. when the cast control cap is too loose, the left side fills more.

2. When the cast control cap is too tight, the right side of the spool is filled more.

3. If the spool is filled more in the middle and less on both edges, more like an arc, you are either holding the line for tensioning too close to the reel or you line counter is setup too close to the reel.

I have had this problem and for a time corrected by guiding the line with my finger as I spooled it up. I noticed one day that a reel was full but not evenly spooled. I went fishiing and the line evened out while I was fishing. I don't worry about uneven spooling anymore!

I do use a Berkley spooler but I'm not sure the it has ant effect goog or bad.

Why would the cast control have any bearing on the spooling of the reel??

Why would the cast control have any bearing on the spooling of the reel??

For the right handed reel:

1. a cast control cap that is button down pushes the spool to the left side of the reel housing, exposing the right side of the spool more than the left.

2. a cast control cap that is loose, creates more space for the spool in the right side of the reel(crank side). That's the reason why they wobble. when the cast control cap is loose it tends to expose the left side of the spool more and making a portion of the right side of the spool go inside the reel housing when spooling it with line. The line tension added when spooling, pulls the spool into the space on the right side of the reel since there's not much space in the left side of the reel.

The reverse happens for the left handed reel.
