OHIO Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Are you an adult when you're 18 or 21? Maybe a better question would be, when do you think you became an adult? For the record, I'm 19, live on my own, and pay bills for myself, but I'm not an adult. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted October 14, 2011 Super User Posted October 14, 2011 Officially it's 18 by government standard (you can vote, join army, rifles, held accountable in a court of law, etc), but it depends on what private sector you look into, most car rentals only allow 25+ Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted October 14, 2011 Super User Posted October 14, 2011 Being a legal adult is 18, being a "mature" adult is not a number.... 1 Quote

Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 14, 2011 Super User Posted October 14, 2011 That is truly a tough question , some people never achieve adulthood. 1 Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I mean I don't think you can really declare yourself an adult. It depends on maturity, responsibilty, things you have done, and etc.I mean it may sound weird coming from an 18 year old but, I think becoming an "adult" is more of something that is earned than just grown into. This is just something my parents have taught me. It almost goes hand in hand with giving and excepting respect if you think about. 2 Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted October 14, 2011 Super User Posted October 14, 2011 If you're on you're own and paying all of your bills by yourself... you're pretty close. Different for everyone, and as has been mentioned everyone does not ever officially become an "adult" with their decision making. Quote

BassThumb Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Good one, Francho! I love those SNL Shorts. You're an adult when you work a full time job and support yourself completely. A 30 y/o living off their parent's hard work and earnings is not an adult, IMO, just an overgrown child. Being an adult means having adult responsibilties. Age is irrelevant. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 15, 2011 Super User Posted October 15, 2011 I found out one day I was driving down the street, 2 HOTTTT!!! twenty something women signaled me to roll down my window. One said "Excuse me SIR" It's been all downhill since then. Quote

Super User skunked_again Posted October 15, 2011 Super User Posted October 15, 2011 Well, I'm sixty-five and I'm still having fun. this. the real question is when do you fully mature. IMO the answer is about 45 years old. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 16, 2011 Super User Posted October 16, 2011 Interesting post. As others have said, when you can sustain yourself on your own you are an adult. For the most part 18 is the age you can do this. Some achieve it earlier, others never do... I think some confuse being an adult with being a man. Being a man includes maturity, strength, wisdom, compassion, sacrifice-putting others needs first. That is a process that takes a little while, and some of us never quite get it. 1 Quote
