I notice the knuckle on my middle finger is sore since getting a baitcaster/s a few months ago. I have a few rods, my grip must be wrong or something. I also notice more stress with heavier lures. Help please

hand youre reeling with or the hand youre holding the rod with? sometimes that star drag knocks my knuckles while reeling. can't think of what else it could be other than from just not relaxing.

Baitcasters tend to be a bit tip heavy and can cause more stress than a spinning rod. Just try switching up your grip. If you're not palming the reel, try that. Try adjusting the number of fingers you have in front of the "trigger" on the rod....on your casts and on your retrieves. I tend to like 3 fingers in front on the retrieve, and two in front on the cast.

right hand, from casting

I usually hold the rod like a gun on casting and then palm it after. I may need to try using more fingers in front of the trigger but my hands are large (im 6 ft 3).....

i have both left and right handed reels

Yeah i don't have large hands. One additional finger forward helps the rod feel more balanced though. Try it.

Might just be the rods you're using too. Maybe they're just bad, unbalanced, heavy rods.

Yea, make certain to match the rods and reels with the baits you are using as well. With the right combo fishing can go from a regular workout to fairly pleasant. Try mixing it up a little, manufacturers ratings don't always meet my expectations anyway.

I have that trouble with one of my rods. The reel is bigger than my others, that combined with the particular design of the grip puts awkward pressure on my finger and it starts to hurt after a while. I find just changing my grip a bit helps.

I've got a sore spot on my ring finger on top of the knuckle. Doctor said it was (I forgot what he called it but it like a cist(sp)). He said some people get rid of them by smashing them real hard against the wall or with a book(he didn't advise that though) or have them removed by the doctor with a needle. You might have the same thing (very common) and it's just a coincidence you developed it when you started using your new reel.

If your problem persists you should let your physician look at it. You may have the beginning of arthritis. I had a wrist problem that would not go away when I fished and found out that it is karpal tunnel. Now I fish pain free with a nsaid once a day.

that would be horrendous, lol. I may have to take a couple weeks off after this weekend and see if it improves. I lift weights daily, Im on the pc alot, no probs...just the baitcaster induces this pain. Ill try adjusting my casting for the rest of the week

Try building up the reel seat to fit your hands with something like BPS rod wrap or a tennis grip. Might help. That is what I did with mine that I have to work the baits with, jerkbaits, spooks etc. Helped me some, may help you?

I had one of those cysts on my wrist. Banged it hard on something solid, hurt like hell, but it went away and never came back.
