yfz 450 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 i was thinking of getting a new rod. i was thinking either a st. croix legend tournament or the dobyns champion. i have other st. croix such as the avids and mojo bass, and i also have a dobyns savy which i really like as well. i just cant make up my mind any help would be appreciated. i am planning to use it as a pitching rod, cranks and spinner baits Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 12, 2011 Super User Posted October 12, 2011 St' Croix Avid is worlds apart from any Mojo Bass rod. The Savvy are nice, too. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 12, 2011 Super User Posted October 12, 2011 Either one will suffice. Quote
dude loves to fish Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 both are great rods, it's preference 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 12, 2011 Super User Posted October 12, 2011 Go to St Croix's web site & check out the new 2012 legend tournament rods. Some nice upgrades from 2011. Specifically new guides to help prevent wind loops with braids. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 12, 2011 Global Moderator Posted October 12, 2011 I've got a couple Legend Tournaments and they are really great rods. Never used a Dobyns but I'm sure they're as good as they say they are. Quote
yfz 450 Posted October 13, 2011 Author Posted October 13, 2011 The only thing I am worried about is I hear of alot about dobyns rods braking... Any input on the reliability of these rods. I got the savvy and love it but it was cheap so if it broke no big deal but the champion is a little more I would like it to last Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 13, 2011 Super User Posted October 13, 2011 I'm a big fan of St. Croix. Avid AVS66MLF Trout, white bass and crappie AVC66MF Jerkbaits AVC70MM Crankbaits and topwater ES70MF My main soft plastics rod EC70MHF Spinnerbaits and Mattlures Baby Bass On the other hand, I tend to fish my Champion 683C more than all these rods combined! If a multipurpose rod is what you are looking for, the Dobyns might be just the ticket. :D Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 13, 2011 Global Moderator Posted October 13, 2011 I don't know about the Dobyn's but I've only ever broke 2 St.Croix rods. One was a Triumph light action spinning rod that broke for no apparent reason. The other was a 6'8" M Mojo spinning rod that my friend tried to lift in about a 3lb bass by holding the last foot of the rod and lifting, not many rods wouldn't have broke in that situation. I have Premiers that are over 10 years old and still going strong. My oldest LTB rod is probably 6 or 7 years old and still works like new. Quote
Midnight Splash2 Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 The only thing I am worried about is I hear of alot about dobyns rods braking... Any input on the reliability of these rods. I got the savvy and love it but it was cheap so if it broke no big deal but the champion is a little more I would like it to last When Dobyns first came out they had issues with breakage with there Generation 1 rods. They ended up dumping that manufacture all together and going with another one to make there newest Generation 2 rods. Whatever you heard was most likely from the Gen 1 rod because as far as I know there are no issues with the Gen 2 rods. If you do happen to break one just take it to a store that carries them and they will swap it out for you for 60 bucks. Quote
Canga Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 unless you like the reel seats on the 2012 LTB rods (or if NSI is that important), look around a bit, lots of places have the 2011 LTB on clearance to make room for the new ones. they did adjust the models some (length, action, etc) so there may be other things to consider, but for the price of a clearance LTB there isnt too much better! yfz 450 Posted October 13, 2011 Author Posted October 13, 2011 yea i have been trying to find sales on the LTB's but i was to late for the TW sale but i found Dobyns champions for $190.00 Quote
Clint C. Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Check the seller jmiller12 on Amazon. I just my ltb for $180 from him Quote
Rob463mx Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I have the avid and I love it. No exp. with the champion but it is a dobyns so who knows. Personally I would go with the avid Quote
FishinTN Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I have some St. Croix LTB, and some dobyns champs. Both are great, have about the best C.S. around and great warrany's. (don't have the new LTB though) I think the LTB is more sensitive than the champ, but the champ usually balances better. I think that is the biggest differances to me between the 2. Either is going to be a great rod. Try to put hands on both and see which feels better to you(handling wise). It will probably come down to personel preference and which you find a better deal on. I personally give the St. Croix a slight edge, but both brands are my favorite 2 rod companys. Quote
