endless Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 the guy at bps told me they are made by gamakatsu.is this true and if not anyone use them? how good are they cause it seems xps makes some good products, if so man you cant beat em for the price. size 5/0 is 4.99 for a 20 pack. i no i bought me a pack to give a try just would like to know how others review them. i did try to do a search and nothing came up. thanks Quote
rubba bubba Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I use them and like them, but don't know who makes them for Bpro. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 27, 2009 Super User Posted July 27, 2009 I've got a package of the XPS hooks but have not used any. They do look similar to the Gammys. The Gamakatsu hooks are made in Japan and the XPS hooks I have are made in Korea. As with a lot of the BPS knockoffs, they may not be the same quality as the ones they look like. Quote
adclem Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I use a lot of the BPS XPS hooks and have never had any issues with them. A lot of hooks for the money compared to other brands. Later, Quote
endless Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 thats why i jumped on them. the price i couldnt pass up. Quote

RobE Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I like most of BPs XPS stuff and have some worm hooks that I haven't opened yet. I have found, however, that the trebles on plugs can stand a little touching-up out of the pkg. How do they dig into your thumbnail? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 27, 2009 Super User Posted July 27, 2009 RobE, thanks for the thumbnail question. I had forgotten about that test. I just did one and the XPS is equal to the Gammys in sharpness. Hopefully the quality of the metal is equal also. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 Why go cheap on hooks? I made the mistake of buying BPS branded hooks one time. I used one each from the two bulk packs I purchased, then threw the rest in the trash. Quote
Stasher1 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I've been using BPS EWG hooks for about 95% of my bass fishing, for the other 5% I use BPS Offset O'Shaugnessy hooks. No problems at all and you just can't beat the price. Quote

Super User burleytog Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 They were horrible hooks. Made Eagle Claws look like Owners. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 But what was wrong with them? I have used them in the past and they where just as good as the other well known names i have tried! Quote

Super User RoLo Posted July 28, 2009 Super User Posted July 28, 2009 Inconsistant sizingPoor quality Eye gaps True, and poor quality is evidenced by edge-keenness that's not durable (low-quality steel). I hasten to add that I too purchased XPS hooks, otherwise I couldn't make that statement Hooks are hugely important tools, and the best way to erase all doubt is to stick to premium hooks. bassfanatick Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 My opinion on them is that they are as good as Gammy. I began using them about a year ago and have yet to lose fish due to breakage. I mainly use the XPS magna superlock in 5/0 size for rigging. This is the pic of the 5lbs fish I caught with the hook, he was wrapped up in the nasty stuff and I got him out. 1 Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I've used them and the quality isn't there IMO. They appear sharp out of the package but they dull very quickly. They also have a tendency to rust and they bend easily. Like RW said, don't skimp on hooks. Quote

Dulled quick, points were soft, and they were a waste of $ compaired to the longevity of premium hooks. Quote
Shimmer Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I've got an order in for some XPS Magna hooks after the supposed "z0mg amazing owner hooks" failed after one outing. Being expensive is fine, but for nearly 25 bucks I didn't expect them to bend and break like my first pack of Southbend value hook packs :-? Gammies work great, but I'm still testing the waters with other brands till I find the perfect one for me personally. Quote
bigtimfish Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Owner and Gamakatsu don't cost that much money. I honestly bought some Eagle Claw worm hooks 1 time. And soon realized I made a mistake. No reason to buy cheap hooks. I am a cheap person too. I am always looking to save money.Even the Good ones are not that expensive Quote
endless Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 well i will give my one pack a shot got em might as well. i just thought they would be better reviewed being that xps is usually highly reviewed on line and lures. not sure bout the rest. i usually buy vmc's but my bps dont sell them. do bps even carry vmc's and if not why? I'll use a hook until I need to re-rig with a different style of hook or heavier weight and I toss the used hook in a special compartment of my terminal tackle box...never to be used again. I don't resharpen them, and don't use a hook long enough to witness any issues with rust. Quote
