Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 The Bait Monkey is putting a BIG squeeze on me. I don't need another reel, but since when has NEED had anything to do with WANT? LOL. Lots of reels I've never tried. I currently have 3 in mind. Lew's Tournament Pro got TT's best value award. They are getting excellent reviews from others as well, and seem to be the current 'hot' model. I really like the looks of the Patriarch XT. Many feel it doesn't get the love it deserves. Like what I've read about it. My 3rd option (at the moment) is a 2010 Premier. Used of course. It's another reel with super feedback from owners. So how about helping me make a decision? Anyone used all 3 models? I think the Tournament Pro is the most expensive by a hair since I would probably have to by it new. But maybe not by the time the money is available. I've seen used Premiers for $175 and the XT for $150. Think that XT is actually a new one. Purdy! Right or left hand makes no difference to me. I can throw a bird's nest equally well with either reel. Notice I didn't say with either hand. The bird's nest would be there alright with the left hand, but I don't think anyone would call it a cast since I've never tried using the left hand. Or I could pick up a used Trion for 1/4 the money. Reviews on it say it performs way above its price point. Of course I could get the Trion now, and one of the others as a Christmas gift for myself. Ooooooooh.....ouch....told you that Bait Monkey was after me. :) Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 The force is strong with Bait Monkey!! I havent used any of them, I had a 2009 Premier, didnt like it and sold it. I dont think you can go wrong with the Lew's. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about them. Good luck and enjoy, post what you got. Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I have the normal Lew's Speed Spool.....I buy my lew's from a guy on ebay from GA........the speed spool is like $82 shipped IIRC. Great reel IMO, so the Tourn models shouls only be better. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 I have the TP & XT. if you are new with a Baitcaster my vote is for a Curado they are very forgiving. IMHO Quote
jdw174 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 TW has the Patriarch 64WLP on sale right now for 109.99, regular 199.99! I just bought two of them. Quote

As is the 71LPL. What is the difference between the two? Bearings and line capacity seem to be the same. How do they compare to the XT? I prefer the looks of the XT. Sometimes we feel like being shallow. However if performance is the same, I would be better off spending the extra $$ the XT costs on more lures. Quote

IMHO When I got back into fishing last year, I decided I wanted to go with baitcasting reels this time. My research lead me to the Curado E7. Planned on getting one. It didn't work out that way. Most of my reels are Daiwas. I am very happy with them. BUT I've always wanted to try a couple Shimanos. I got my daughter a plastics rod for Christmas last year. Bought her a Chronarch 101A for it before fishing season started this year. Got to cast it a few times before giving it to her. I liked it. Want one for myself. I picked up a 51E when they were going for $98 if you signed up for their newsletter. (Bad choice as I now get tempted on a regular basis to buy more gear.) Also picked up a Chronarch 100B at the same time. Haven't spooled line on the 51E yet. Haven't mounted the 100B on a rod yet. In fact need a couple more rods! Which is why I'm looking for one of the 3 I mentioned. I am going to have to change my username. new2BC4bass is still an apt description of me, but I think there is another one that fits even better. Super User K_Mac Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 A freind of mine picked up a couple of the Curado 51Es on clearance a few weeks ago. They are outstanding. I am not a Shimano posse member, but you are going to like that reel. Quote

I'll just have to keep looking. Quote

I have owned all 3 and I now use the xt, but for the money that 64 wlp would be my choice. Nice wide spool, and good all around gear ratio. I paid $160 on ebay for my xt, and if your dilligent you might find a 64 wlp cheaper than $109. Quote

Near as I can see, the numbers refer to the retrieve ratio. the "64" refers to a 6.4:1, and the "71" would be a hi-speed. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 10, 2011 Super User Posted October 10, 2011 71PL = LEFTY I think? Quote

Super User dodgeguy Posted October 11, 2011 Super User Posted October 11, 2011 patriarch xt hands down!!! Quote
breezy Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 I think all three reels you mentioned are so similar it comes down to small personal preferences. Which knobs do you like better, which color, etc. I would expect very little (if any) performance difference between the reels. Quote

Good luck and enjoy, post what you got. "Strong" might be putting it lightly. I did as I posted at the end. Decided to buy the mint Trion now, and wait until later to get one of the others. Trion was suppose to be shipped today. I didn't expect "later" to be today. Sent a MO out for a mint Patriarch XT this afternoon. The Lew's Tournament Pro will have to wait until sometime next year........Honest. Quote
