AirbusAngler Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 So I have been trying out this new lake which is known for larger bass but low catch rates. I seem to be getting skunked about 45-50%% of the time. I am just wondering how often you guys get skunked? Some times I feel like I am the only one that can go out on the lake and not catch a fish, especially after having high hopes after watching some YouTube videos on tips and tricks lol Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Lately I have been getting skunked quite often and just have to figure this fall pattern out. Quote
zip pow Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 I always do better on new lakes because I don't have any idea's on where an how to catch them I always start looking for bait then fish. How ever that being said on my home lake I get skunked about four times a year that's fishing a about 150 days. Not bad but I believe if I fished my home lake the way I fish new lakes that number would go down. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 7, 2011 Super User Posted October 7, 2011 I got skunked last time on Port Bay, but my buddy Duane caught quite a few from the back of the boat. I don't get skunked too much bass fishing, but trout fishing, that's another story. I'm at a point where I'm really only after monster steelhead anyway, so it's not a big deal, and being outside is totally worth it. Quote
NateFollmer Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 I just got skunked last night... But I was fishing somewhere I have never been AND I only had about 30 minutes on the water... Actually, I get skunked more with the fly rod than a do anything else. I'd say maybe 1 in 6 or 7 trips I come up empty. Quote
tholmes Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 I really don't get skunked when bass fishing very often. There are days when I only catch one or two dinks, but I usually catch something. Tom Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted October 7, 2011 Super User Posted October 7, 2011 Funny you posted this, I got skunked yesterday and most of today until I emptied out my tackle box and gave them an inline spinner. Old time fishing...LOL Quote
NJBasstard Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Most of this year I'd catch something half of the time I went out. About two months ago I started telling myself I'm not going home without catching something, and it's been good so far. It's deffinatly got me trying new things and I feel I've become a better angler because of it. Most of the stuff I've been doing is stuff I see suggested to others here on BR. I know I haven't gotten skunked since.. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 7, 2011 Super User Posted October 7, 2011 Only once this year. During my last tourney of the season. Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 7, 2011 Super User Posted October 7, 2011 My skunk ratio is directly proportional to the size of fish I´m targeting, 8-12 inchers ? very seldomly, 10+ pounders ? man, I don´t even want to now my skunk ratio but it stinks like ..... skunk. 1 Quote
AirbusAngler Posted October 7, 2011 Author Posted October 7, 2011 haha thanks everyone for the inputs! glad to know im not the only one that comes up empty now and then Quote
flippin4it. Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Alot depends on how long l fish. Sometimes it takes awhile to get it dialed in. Quote
flippin4it. Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 If all else fails l do 2 things. Slow it down to the point of deadsticking the bait (senko or Fat Ika) or speeding it way up with a "burner" type spinnerbait. A good shakey head set up will put 5 in the boat too. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 Depends on time of year, fishing location, and target species, too much ground to cover so I'll stick to bass. During the summer months bass fishing is not easy in my area and I do get skunked, in the winter I never get skunked. I have a scenario going on now that i can't figure out. With the cooler weather and reduced humidity I have started do some bass fishing, I'm catch a few in the local canals and some of the ponds, not too hard. But this is the problem, my home ponds which generally are very good and the canal behind my house which also is very productive, I can't get hit to save my life, the ponds are landlocked and there is no where for the fish to go. I can walk over to another pond in my community and get hit quite a bit, they run small and I prefer going after the larger fish even if I go biteless. One of my neighbors, who is strictly a plastic worm user is having the same problems. Quote

I'm with Raul on this. 1-2lb=10%, 2-4lb=30% , 4-6lb=90%, 6+lb=98% Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 On the lake I fish the most I say 97% (avg 3 times per week 4-5hrs each time) I dont get skuncked. It is only 2 miles from me and small 26acres. When I do get to go to a couple other lakes one of them I always catch at least one bass amd that a 6-7 hr day. There is another lake go to only 2-3 times a year and that lake Ill get skuncked 50% of the time so that might be why I dont go much but it does hold bigger bass. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 Last time I was skunked was 3 or 4 years ago, now I have had a couple trips this year where I only boated 1 or 2 on new water. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 I have been skunked on probably every body of water I have ever fished including far north Canadian lakes. Never two days in a row. Stuff happens. A good skunk-in helps you appreciate what a rose really smell like. 2 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted October 8, 2011 Super User Posted October 8, 2011 Just actually had my first skunk of the season yesterday. Fall has always been hit/miss on my home lake, and two weeks ago was off the hook while yesterday was a complete miss. I waved the white flag after 4 hours without a hit. Just happens sometimes. flippin and pitchin Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I often wear a green cap with a big yellow "O" on the front. Many ask me if I am an Oregon Duck fan ? I respond, " No that's how many fish I caught my last time out. I'm on a local forum where my thread name is SKUNK DAWG. I like to tease myself. Quote
Red Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 I have ben skunked two days in a row now!! Everything is backwards this year. Normally I struggle in the heat of summer and kill em in the fall. Did great this summer and can't catch a lick now that the heat is gone and water temps are dropping. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted October 9, 2011 Super User Posted October 9, 2011 Fortunately skunks don't rear their ugly heads (or perhaps I should mention the other end) often. My biggest concern though is whether the day's catch lives up to my expectations. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted October 9, 2011 Super User Posted October 9, 2011 I have been skunked on probably every body of water I have ever fished including far north Canadian lakes. Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 9, 2011 Super User Posted October 9, 2011 Dwight, I will make sure we never get skunked in S. FLA Thanks buddy. Quote
BassThumb Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 I get skunked once in a while, especially during seasonal transition phases and at the very end of the year right before the lakes freeze. Northerns and bass under 8" don't count. Quote
