St. Louis area members: Finally close on my house at Lake of the Ozarks next week, and any member who can get away to fish this late fall and winter is welcome to go bass and crappie fishing with me! I fish pretty hard and prefer that you have some fishing acumen. Just prefer to fish with one other person. I have the boat, and I've been fishing the lake for many years. Carpooling might work or you can arrange to drive down. I will probably stay down at least 3-5 days at a time weather permitting. Have a spare bed. Let me know if you're interested. We'll split expenses.

What part of the lake will you be on? My family has a cabin at the 51MM.

I'll be located at the six MM, due south of the Gravois. Probably the best location for winter angling.

I fish down there some in the early spring before the big boats get out.

I've never had the opportunity to fish LOZ in the winter...Hmmmmmm

You won't regret it. Last year was very good, and the population of bass at Lake O. is quite healthy. Between Thanksgiving and CDhristmas was indeed spectacular. Shoot me a pm and we can get trip planned.

Beware, he's not kidding about fishing hard. Daylight till dark but he's a good guide and will put you on some fish. I've had the pleasure of fishing with Nick several times a yr for the past few yrs. Nick, I'm working

on the plans for the mid Dec trip.

Thanks, Marty, for the kind words, but I may need to tell members who want to come down to fish the Lake that I am not guiding anyone for a fee. Just fishing out of my boat for fun.

I can see where my comment could be misleading. Let me say he doesn't mind putting his partner in the good spots first. I've always caught fish with this guy, no matter the conditions.

Hey, Nick, do you expect a lot of boat traffic at night after dark in the summer on the week nights? Do you intend to do some night fishing for bass next summer?

No, there's not that much traffic at night after 11 on weeknights. I plan to do some night fishing. I'll have plenty of private brush piles to fish.

Nick,

I am also a "Nick",but from from west central Illinois. Recently purchased a condo on GG arm and have enjoyed fishing LOZ a great deal. I retired recently and plan to spend considerable time down there in the years to come. I have always been a multi-species fisherman, but look forward to the bass fishing at Lake of the Ozarks. I have a small deep vee (Tracker pro guide, 50 horse) so tend to stay on the Grand Glaize. Would be interested in meeting up and sharing some time on the water. Nick

I will keep this in mind. I am from Rolla and also fish LOZ as much as I can. great lake. message me with some contact info and we should fish sometime. great gesture. thanks.

My normal fishing/tournament partner has had to reduce his fishing drastically due to work and finances which really leaves me without a partner to fish with.

So far this winter on L:ake of the Ozarks, of 19 days logged fishing, I've not had the most productive bass bite. One day my partner and I did catch 42 largemouth, but in the main single digit results were more typical. I love to jerkbait, but he darn baitfish just refuse to show up shallow in the lower lake, so this bite has no been good for me. Guess I'll have to throw the jig more and maybe fish the big balls of shad deep with a spoon. Not my idea of fun...

Luckily, the crappie fishing has been quite good until now and with the water temps still in the mid 40's, looks like ice won't be a problem this year. I'll get in a couple of trips this month to check out my newly planted brush piles also.

Went down to the lake home this week and fished Sunday and Tuesday. Bass were on fire. Water temps just 39-41 but the bass have finally moved shallower in places. Totaled 47 on Sunday in five hours and 61 today in 7 hours. No great big girls but plenty of 15- 18 inch fat bass all caught on jerkbaits. Megabass, RIck Clunns, and Ima Flits all good. By far and away the best of this winter.

Nick, have you been on the lake lately? I'm near mm 31. Didn't do very well last Friday, bluebird day and great to be on the water, but the fish were eluding me. How have you been doing?

Posted

Since November, I've fished 23 days for bass at Lake of the Ozarks and caught 273. I bought a home there last fall with expectations to fish, and so far the weather has been quite cooperative.

All except a couple were caught on suspending jerkbaits. The season started very slowly, but when the lake temps dropped into the low 40's the shad moved closer to the banks and the bite really picked up around Jan. 15. Haven't caught any wallhangers, but 42 were legal catches with two right at 5 lb.

The crappie bite was probably better, but I didn't really keep accurate stats on them. From Nov-late December 40 - 75 fish days were the norm. They have cooled off as the bass have heated up, so that's welcome. Now, in mid Feb. I feel lucky to catch 15 a day.

The hot deal for many anglers this winter has been the Alabama rig, but I must be the worst in the world at this as I have caught nothing but brushpiles in the few times I've tried it.

The water is still in the lower 40's, and the lake is down to it's normal winter level of 5 feet below full pool. Spring appears to be right around the corner.

sounds like a good winter for you so far. I fish mostly around the Linn Creek area. Water temp was 42 last weekend. Saw fish suspended at 15 to 20 ft. In 25 to 30 ft of water.

Posted

Did any of you fish Lake of the Ozarks this past weekend? How was it? Water temp? Have the bass started moving shallow yet?

Posted

Harva,

Bass on Lke O. are relatively shallow all winter, at least some f them. Rarely do I fish a lure that goes deper than 15 ft. Usually the jerkbaits suspend at about 5-8 feet deep. I like to keep the boat in 15-25 feet of water and throw shallower.

The bass will begin moving to shallower waters as the waters warm. When the temps hit 50, I have confidence in 2 feet of water given the right water color and wind. If you want greater fish activity that 50 degree mark is probably what you want. Time then for crawdad cranks and jigs in yuour part of the lake. Pay attention to type of rock composition, wind, and breaklines where you are getting bit. Some years it's the coves points with chunk rock or a mixture of rock, and some years it could be flatter, gravel banks opposite the creek channels in coves, and sometimes it's the backs of coves, middles, or fronts, and sometimes it's the main lake. And then there are docks....and brush.........geez... lots of variables to fighure out.

Posted

Nick, how's the crappie fishing been? I'm hoping to get to the lake this weekend. I see the water temp is still about 41, might be a little cool yet? Bought some new gear at BPS sale and itching to give it all a try.

Posted

Just got done fishing there- plenty of fish shallow-ish. caught most on a shad crank 8-10ft. Still catching the bigger fish deep- 18-20 ft range with hair jigs and craw trailer off brush piles, off docks, near deeper water.

I have a customer in Sunrise Beach and will be headed back up there sometime this year to upgrade their systems. I would love to fish with you if you would have me. When i figure out my schedule and know when I will be there I will let you know and maybe we can fish a bit.

Thanks,

Jed Cole
