H2O21a Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Hello Folks: I have a question; I recently have been introduced to perch and other pan fish fishing. I also adore slip bobber fishing. I would like to get rod and the reel for this type of fishing. Why is everyone suggesting spinning rods and reels for pan fish and slip bobber fishing techniques? I have used baitcasters in the past and I am pretty confident using them, but I would like to know why everyone is recommending spinning reels. Whyare spinning reels superior when it comes to pan fish and slip bobber fishing? Please, explain…. Thanks Ahead. Quote
kLuo Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 They can handle lighter weights, and it makes it easier for you to cast and manage your line. I would definitely stick with spinning for panfish and perch. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 One problem is that when using a pure slip bobber, the bait is often not heavy enough to pull the line through. The fix is to use bobber stops top and bottom esentially pinning the float. This results in a long leader/terminal rig so a long (10-13') spinning rod aids in casting. If you you research Float n Fly rigs you'll see similar recomendations. Now, on the other hand, it is not unheard of for folks like steelhead fishermen to use a long casting rod to make long drifts in currents. Bottom line, either can be done. Quote
BassThumb Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Are you considering spinning reels vs. spincasting reels, like a Zebco? Or is it spinning vs. baitcasting? Quote
H2O21a Posted October 6, 2011 Author Posted October 6, 2011 I normally use baitcasters for lure that’s ¾ oz and higher, but I would like to start fishing more fluffy lures and I am wondering if spinning equipment (rod/reel) are really that superior for lures that’s 1/2oz and less…. Are you considering spinning reels vs. spincasting reels, like a Zebco? Or is it spinning vs. baitcasting? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 6, 2011 Super User Posted October 6, 2011 Panfish lures can be anywhere from 1/4 or 1/8 oz. to as little as 1/100 oz. Spinning reels and fairy wands are the recommended gear. Quote
