GSU_LipRipper Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 So the fall patterns are starting to kick in as well all know! But what is everyone throwing? If you had 5 rods (4 casting 1 spinning) what would you have tied on? Im curious to know what everybody likes to throw and am looking for new baits to add to the arsenal! Im all ears! Super User Catt Posted October 4, 2011 Super User Posted October 4, 2011 Seasonal patterns are more about locations than lures 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 4, 2011 Super User Posted October 4, 2011 Spinnerbaits Crankbaits Chatterbaits Senkos Plastics on shaky head and drop shot Remember, as Catt said, what are the conditions you are fishing? Lots of wood and grass? Flat mud bottom? Drop offs? Points and creek mouths? Backs of creeks? Humps? Then, what are the weather conditions and cloud cover? Just telling you how to rig is only a part of the puzzel. You have to add in the other factors and then hope for the best. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 4, 2011 Super User Posted October 4, 2011 GSU_LipRipper, my point is & this is in no way picking on Sam but his choice of lures for fall fishing is as follows. Spinnerbaits Crankbaits Chatterbaits Senkos Plastics on shaky head and drop shot My question to Sam would be do you not fish these lures year round? And I’m fairly confident Sam’s answer would be yes Seasonal patterns is a choice of locations not lures, any lure will work year round if used in the proper location and under the proper conditions. Winter, spring, summer, or fall you must follow the “bait” to be successful, this will give you the location. During the spring & fall most bait will move into creek/river channel coves The first move will be to the mouths so target points The second move will be about midway so target irregularities in the creek/river channel The final move will be to the back of the creek/river channel coves so target shallow near the creek/river channel. Work the entire water column top, mid, and bottom at each location until you establish additional patterns. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 4, 2011 Super User Posted October 4, 2011 Catt is right. I gave only the types of baits. Not the details. You have to figure out which baits will work under which conditions. That is the fun of bass fishing. Some baits work great in Virginia. Others are fantastic in Florida while still others work great in Texas. You have to be fluid and find out what the bass want on that specific day.v Quote
Ponz Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 All he's asking is what do you guys use, he's just curious, I'm not a big time angler but I stick with lures, I'd rig my rods with a 10 inch worm for the big bass that have been growing all summer, another with some horny toads if you know how to use them (it seems to pull out the bigger bass from under the lily pads or deep brushes), another with a creature bait. It may not look like anything natural but I always get bass from 2-5 lb bass anytime of day and the other 2 with just top waters. I still call myself a rookie basser but what I'm using is catching bass and I'm excited to try new stuff for this October weather. Quote

Until you learn there aint no summer lures, winter lures, fall lures, or spring lures you’ll stay a rookie! 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Until you learn there aint no summer lures, winter lures, fall lures, or spring lures you’ll stay a rookie! To an extent...Catt you know that a Spook is much more "effective" around here (Toledo Bend) from April-October than it is from November-March. Not saying you cant catch em on a spook then because I have done it, but it isn't a "premeier" bait for those conditions. Quote
bandsr4me20 Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 1. Jig 2. Rat l trap, Super spot, or Redeye Shad 3. Spinnerbait 4. Zara spook or h2o knockoff lucky craft topwater 5. Number 5 or 7 shallow shad rap Quote
sir sluggo Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Water is muddy here so Ive been throwing black colorado blade spinnerbaits. Quote
zip pow Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 What do you do when there's bait every where you go but no active fish? This is the most puzzling thing about fall fishing 1 Quote
bwell Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Go home lol, but really if I see that I tend to fish a little deeper... Quote

Not saying you cant catch em on a spook then because I have done it, but it isn't a "premeier" bait for those conditions. That's sort of the point Catt is making, though BF. There's not a hard and fast rule as to what will work when and how. The conditions present is what dictate the lure of choice. In response to the original post, I use the same thing I'd use any other time of year with little exception. When the water is sub 60 degrees, I've got a jerkbait on. I'll be fishing the same Northstar 3/4 ounce Willow/willow that I've been throwing since February (and winning tournaments with it), I'll be fishing the same LFT Ring Fry, I'll be fishing the same swimbait, I'll be fishing the same dropshot, and the same jig. The biggest thing that changes in fall is not my baits of choice, it's my choice of location. In regards of what I do when I see massive amounts of baitfish is to fish those areas and conditions that don't require me to be at their mercy. There are still fish in areas that are not relating to those roaming pods of bait. There are still active fish on deep structure that are available to other methods without having to run and gun. GSU_LipRipper Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Thanks for all the input and yes i agree there is a lot more than just the lures, conditions, structure (no structure?) cloud cover all that obviously comes into play. Haha i reckon the question was a bit broad you could say.. but being relatively new** compared to some of you all, there is still a lot i have to learn. Fishing at the college level for the first time is pretty intense and i appreciate every bit of information yall give me! Catt those steps will def. help out a lot! In general i am able to figure out the pattern but sometimes by the time i do so i am out of time haha so anything to help me do so quicker is obviously a big help! Once again thank yall for the info! All is taken into consideration! Thanks -Ryan Cast and Destroy Quote
Colton Neal Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Fall equals moving fast and covering water for aggressive fish. So for me i like shad imitating baits since they are gorging on shad. These include the Zara Spook, Strike king spit N king, Buzz baits, swim baits, and jerkbaits like the lucky craft pointer. Quote
