Dockhead Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Can I get some recommendations on a good old fashioned broom stick? Under $200, over 7", one piece. Gonna throw plastics with it. Feel free to recommend specific baits and weights you use with the particular rod you recommend. Thanks a lot. Quote
BassHole5 Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I have a 7' H-XF Abu Garcia Veritas and it really isn't a T-Rig rod, I just don't like a rod that stiff for it but if u like It then I would recommend it and I know that Denali, Falcon, Shimano, and Duckett all make a rod that is between 7'-7'6" and has a Heavy action Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Its according to what you call a "broomstick". I have a Powell Endurance 714C (heavy action) and have used it for jigs and t-rigs and liked it, but it just fishes hollow bellys better. I also have a Dobyns Savvy 734 that I am using for Jigs and punching mats right now. It is a great jig rod for weights up to 3/4 oz, but it gets overpowered after that. It is really too light to punch with, but its all i got lol. I throw my T-rigs on a 7' MH/F St. Croix Avid. I am about to get a Dobyns Champion 766 FLIP. It looks awesome, feels awesome, and hopefully fishes awesome. It is closer to what I would call a "broomstick" than the rest. It is rated for up to 2oz baits. Quote
BassThumb Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 The Dobyns 766 is a "broomstick" in my opinion, but I would never want a rod that heavy for casting soft plastics. I've tried it, it doesn't work well. You want a little softer tip for casting plastics. Look into the Dobyns Champion 735 for mainly casting soft plastics. It makes an excellent pitching stick, works great for casting soft plastics and jigs, and is an OK flipping stick, just as long as you're not fishing deep in the heaviest cover in the lake, like punching weed mats. If you're willing to wait a little, Bass Tackle Depot and Tackle Warehouse will be having Black Friday sales that will bring the price of this rod down to $200 shipped. A new 735 for $200 is pretty hard to beat. Quote

1234567 Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Kistler makes a rod called the broomstick. 7 XH magnesium casting rod. I have one of these and it is a broomstick. I think TW sells it for around $150 bucks, and $200 for the micro guide one. Quote
Stasher1 Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 If I had the expendable cash id scoop that up NGaHB Keep an eye on that seller's auctions because they're always having sales like that. They're great people to deal with as well, and will have your rod to you in record time since they're just a few hours away in the B'ham area. Quote

I actually got my first Kistler from them alittle over a year ago. They were real solid people to deal with then. -NGaHB Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 5, 2011 Super User Posted October 5, 2011 If I had the expendable cash id scoop that up NGaHB I thought about them to replace my catfish rods? Quote
North Ga Hillbilly Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Itd be a high class cat tamer. I would stick with Ugly Sticks for cats, or some other such rod thats made to give if you hook up with a big un. Reason I say that is because you never know if its going to be a 6# or a 40# when cat fishin. But, I cant say it wouldn't do a good job, just not what I'd look for in a cat rod. NGaHB EDIT: a soft tip will allow a cat to set those circle hooks, I dont think these rods would allow for that, but I could be wrong. Quote
Dockhead Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 I have several good plastic casting rods, I'm just looking for a true thick stick. The closest thing I have tried is a St. Croix Mojo 7' Heavy. It is the action/power I am talking about, but I was thinking of trying to find something with more sensitivity. Quote

Indiana Bass1 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Simmons Sporting Goods is one solid company to buy from. I have bought several rods and reels from them in the past. I have talked to Russell many times on the phone and told him what I was wanting in a rod and he always got me set up with what I was looking for. I never buy anywhere else before talking to these guys period! Quote
brushhoggin Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 keep your eyes out for a Kistler LTA Helium 7'6" H fast action. haven't owned a slew of heavy rods to compare em to but it has certainly been an amazing rod for punching/pad fishing. a bass gently inhaling your bait feels like a violent tremor throughout the blank LOL and although it's frowned upon, i have hoisted 5 pounders covered in thick grass into the boat numerous times with this rod for over two years now (knock on wood) with no breaks despite its super light weight Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 10, 2011 Super User Posted October 10, 2011 Let us know how they are NGaHB I got my rods Today & I must say I'm impressed! For $50 they are 1 HELL of a deal!!! They say "Grass Puncher x" On them. The punch rod I have now is 7'6'' & thats great out of the boat or from the bank but too long from the Kayak (for me) 7' Will be great in the Kayak. Another thing I like is the grip is a bit smaller in diamiter than the grip on my other split grip Kistler. I'd highly advise everyone to pick one up. The Shimano is a nice rod for the money too (other than the EVA) & BTW it's not White but a Grayish color. Btw the Shimano Sellus is a Crankbait rod but at Medium power I think it'll make a better weightless plastic rod. imho Quote

Paired with a SX HS with 50lb 832. I used this 99% of the time from a SOT kayak in the weeds and pads. Love it. I found it had the stiffness and the right flex for this app. I have a couple of Veritas H Xf that i would have been a little worried to use. Can't go wrong with the Kistler IMO. Quote

That rod could probably bring up a goliath grouper. Its not even a challenge when a bass gets hooked on it. Quote
