Super User slonezp Posted September 30, 2011 Super User Posted September 30, 2011 "They're not punishing him. They're trying to make it fair for the rest of the kids." Why on earth would a school promote "striving to be average"? I don't know about you guys, but IMO competing against people that are better than you inherently makes you try harder to win. Life isn't fair. If you're not good enough for the football team then maybe you should take up something else. I know if I was this kids parent I'd be P'od. http://news.yahoo.com/video/sports-15749645/boy-banned-from-scoring-touchdowns-26780284.html 1 Quote
GrundleLove Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I see this as the same as the slaughter rule in little league....fair. also, the kid in question is VERY cool with it..isent that all that matters? EDIT: also, its only when his team is ahead by two TD's can he not score again...not like he cant score all together, topic misleading. Edit2: Actually...the more I think about it? Screw it. This kid needs to run TRAIN on his opposition just completely demolish everyone in sight. Then maybe fat kid Billy will learn how to hit the heavy bag, work on his speed and not play Club Penguin 24/7 and eat Pizza Bites. Then maybe he could actually take down this kid. He has the same chances as anyone he plays to be as good as him and if other lazy kids dont want to follow suit? Screw em...they lose. 3 Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted September 30, 2011 Super User Posted September 30, 2011 I agree I never bought into that whole philosophy I think that's why I stoped playing hs sports I wanted to win and my school sucked horribly because no one got cut everyone played even if they were the worst. I stoped playing base ball and turned my attention to every kid who plays paintballs dream and go pro and I did for one season but we were undeafeted if u sucked guess what u got cut or didn't play that point or match. Playing for rhythem I was never told "hey Clayton ease up let some one else take this one in or take the snake" no it was Clayton get in there hit em hard and fast and never let up I started every point. But that wasn't a school sport but it's still a sport and 90% of the team was in school still. My best friend had a full ride to Syracuse fir football because he was amazing he got it cuz the coach wasn't telling him to sit out and let the other guys take it. I see it in school being a teachers aide kids who don't belong anywhere near a customers car because there grades are horrible and they don't know squat there just there to skip homeschool but they whine and complain and get to swap injectors on a truck or a clutch and always mess it up. It's th same with sports if your not top dog don't expect to be treated like one go out here and practice and become better and prove yourself don't cry about it and blow it for everyone. Ok rant over lol Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted September 30, 2011 Super User Posted September 30, 2011 Didn'the president say yesterday that America has been getting a little soft over the past two decades? Then he went on to say we need to get our competitive edge back. It's been about twenty years that we began worrying about a youngster's self esteem. Don't do anything to hurt his/her feelings or make them feel inferior. Then, they get out in the real world and find out they are inferior in some ways, as we all are. Add political correctness run rampant and you've got the perfect storm for the decline of any civilization or country. Ahhhhh, the great success story, outcome based education, where they seek equal outcomes for all. Too bad it doesn't work that way out in the dog eat dog world. Quote

The army has become extremely soft I'm still fairly green iv been in for almost 4 years now and my cycle threw Benning wasthe last all infantry rotation. Now there allows cell phones they can give the drill sgts "stress" cards if they feel to stressed and th DS has to leave them alone. they also have to warm you up prior to smoking you when I was in basic and now with my unit u get told beat ur face u do it no warning no warm ups. Then there's pt we have a few females attached to us now and they complained all the way up the chain of command and were not allowed to do pt anymore. We still do but we just leave them out it's so pathetic what our society is coming to all this equal crap we have had so many AWOLs these past few months all fresh pvts fresh from basic they show up once see what were doing getting ready to deploy in November and thy peace out and just get a slap on he wrist thanks for trying and go on there merry way. Didn't George carlin do a skit on the wussification of America Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 1, 2011 Super User Posted October 1, 2011 At a quick glance I initially thought this topic was about my grandson, he is from Indiana with very similar football talents and accomplishments. I do believe no one should be restricted from doing their best. Sports and entertainment have always been vehicles for some to create a better life for themselves. I think what the President had in mind, so many others feel the same, is that we have become soft in the education department, I don't think competitive sports is what he had in mind. How to improve education has been the hot topic all week. Getting our edge back has more to do with what's going on in the classroom than on the gridiron field, 1 tackle can end a football career for life a youngster, not to mention that there are lots of kids excelling in sports and the chance of making it all the way to the pros is slim. Super User Fishing Rhino Posted October 1, 2011 Super User Posted October 1, 2011 "WTVF’s Vicki Yates, WXII’s Cameron Kent, and WESH’s Jim Payne all got seven minutes with the President and, even though each interview had a local focus, Obama’s message appeared to be the same throughout all of them: things are bad but will get better, as long as my jobs bill is passed. One notable exchange, though, came when Payne wondered whether his children would have the same opportunities as generations past. Obama responded by saying he feels that America has gotten “a little soft.” President Obama told Payne: The way I think about it is this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft, and we didn’t have that same competitive edge we needed over the last couple of decades. We need to get back on track. But I still wouldn’t trade our position with any country’s on Earth. We still have the best universities and scientists and best workers in the world. We still have the most dynamic economic system in the world. We need to bring all those things together." I don't read that as specifically referring to schools. It's referring to opportunities out there once they are finished with school. However, I do believe that "softness" has permeated all segments of our society. It has become anathema to excel, because it makes others feel badly, at least in the school system. While it all begins in the home, this stuff is being drilled into kids at four years of age and in some cases earlier when they begin attending pre-primary and kindergarten. However, it seems to me that the question was asked in reference to the lack of good jobs and opportunity that awaits future generations when they become adults. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 1, 2011 Super User Posted October 1, 2011 Being a teachers aide I see it first hand. I work for a career and tech school we only accept jrs and srs but the home school dump all of there trouble kids on us we get the bottom of the barrel I mean there's a few exeptions but probably 75% of the kids are deemed slow because of some stupid disability that the kids and home schools use to skate them threw. Hello if the kid can't read what the heck is he doing in diesel class but honestly they can read if they couldn't read I guess they wouldn't be on face book or txting. Or they come to us because they can't do math but are expected to perform in machine shop or carpentry or even my class diesel building engines theres a ton of math. Were are pressured to push the kids threw the no child left behind crap and the kids have learned to work the system. We have kids who claim they can't read so we have to read for them well how does that help them seriously if we sit here and have to read the torque specs for an engine to the kid he should be and needs to able to go over pick up the book flip to he specs page and find the spec remember or write it down the torque specs and do it. But no I have to find it read it an tell them because other wise they cry to mommy and the councilor and I get a phone call saying to go by the kids IEP and read for them. These kids are never going to make it in the re world and we will be paying for here welfare checks. Quote

Is it lack of good jobs, or lack of good talent to fill or create opportunities? In the trade I'm in there are alot of guys not working. The guys that are working, in many cases, have jobs because they have more to offer. To be competitive with the rest of the world is going to take more than just education. Many kids and adults lack any kind of drive. I believe that "drive" is either something you are born with, are taught at a very young age, or acombination of the two. Too many people do the bare minimum to get by. This kid has a ton of talent. The school should be encouraging him not retarding him. Quote

People assume that if you get your hands dirty to make a living you must be a moron. The technology in many types of mechanical fields has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Everything is run with computers/ computer controls nowadays. "Morons" don't last or don't excel in these fields. If you owned a trucking company, you wouldn't hire morons to fix and maintain trucks that cost you 150k each. I'm a refrigeration mechanic. If you were a grocery store owner, Would you hire a moron to be responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars of food if the coolers/freezers broke down? We have shop guys who drive parts, clean coils, etc. That's how you get your foot in the door. One guy in particular always complains. He's been here 2 years and is only a driver, while 2 other guys clean coils and help out on jobs. The driver shows ZERO innitiative. Never offers to lend a hand, and is on the phone constantly. The other 2 guys are always willing to lend a hand. Asking questions and trying to learn. Most of all, they do what they're and they don't complain. They have drive and a willingness to excel. The driver believes he deserves to move up because he's been here longer. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted October 1, 2011 Super User Posted October 1, 2011 This issue has nothing to do with the kid, and everything to do with the long history of schools and their coaches that try to justify their supposed greatness by running up the score in lopsided contests. Every type of mercy rule finds its roots there. Back in history (early 1990's)I can remember UM pounding the University of Houston in a lopsided football game. It was funny to hear the Houston coach whining about UM running up the score when the very next week Houston scored something like 70 unanswered points against a Div-II school. Hopefully the kid recognizes that his talent isn't something so special that he falls into the trappings that might await him in the near future. Hopefully his future coachs realize it too. Quote

I understand that I took that crap when I wrenched people look down because your a mechanic but I know for one thing they would be lost if they had to rebuild a auto transmission or with these new computers in cars or add ones hooking a laptop up and re working the pulse width on injectors and timing or the vtech in hondas like u said a moron can't do that stuff. Kinda like the difference in a mechanic and a technician. The mechanic is a parts changer nothing more. I had a situation like yours with the driver I got a job for Nissan right out of college right off the bat I jumped into doing warranty work an higher level stuff then the normal oil changes. I stayed there for a month and left cuz of the drive and the manager hooked me up with another shop localy owned close to home. Same thing worked there an because of my talent I guess I got all the brain teaser jobs and big jobs important stuff and I was the new guy it made some of the old timers mad that I just show up and start doing diagnostic work and head gaskets ect. But I would ask everything I could ever chance to learn from george the owner and he did the same to me he knew older systems and I knew all the new computer stuff. The other guys just sat around and were bums always late or hung over so all thy did is swap parts brakes tires alternators stuff like that a lot of the time it would be after I would hook the scanner up an say hey it needs this and this left bank is running lean needs this and they would get mad. quanjig Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Wow, awsome way to teach your child to to be a competitor. I think I would have my kids play up to the next level. If he's trouncing kids his own age, jump up an age group or weight class and let him go! I think this thread got off to a different direction. Adults are one thing, being unmotivated or thinking you are entitled to something is one thing. Kids that are talented or more developed at a young age is a whole other issue. Either way, things need to change in terms of the way we approach the generations of young people growing up in the United States. I don't have any kids, and I'm sure it's not an easy thing to do raising them in today's world. I have friends that do things the right way as well as what I think is questionable at best! If it was easy, everyone would have 10+ kids! I just think we can all do a better job of making things right for all generations. Quote

Super User Sam Posted October 11, 2011 Super User Posted October 11, 2011 As the young player gets older he will play with bigger and faster kids his age and not enjoy the current success he is having. Then, as he goes through high school he will have better coached and faster talent to help him on offense and stop him on defense. In college he will have to continue to be fast to survive on both sides of the line. Unless he is extremely talented; did not get injured; and has the desire to play in the NFL he will stop playing ball; have a career; get married; have kids; and get fat and slow. And then he could "burn out" before college and take up golf. Quote
