Started a little late but since the wind & weather had laid up, we headed out to my wifes "Lucky Lake". The water was flat calm, the air was dead quite and we were surrounded by a Colorful North Woods Autumn. It was nice.

I would be her guide for the afternoon, so I was feeling the pressure to produce. We slipped into a familiar cove to find it just chock full of bait. They were dimpling the surface all over; and every few minutes the serenity was rudely interrupted by hungry smb blasting the surface eager to get there fill. It was looking pretty good for the guide.

Took a few on top by "walking the dog" with a spook - that was fun. When that died down, a tube started to do a bit more damage. My girl was making it happen and the guide couldn't be happier.

On one particular hook set, the drag on her spinner was being worked quite a bit more than usual. Then it actually screamed a bit, followed by a very spirited canoe dragging and spinning evolution and had both the angler and her guide very excited.

Having not seen the creature at this point we were both thinking "Really Big Smallie". The conditions were certainly right for it - but then we got a look - at a very hearty Pike. Certainly a good photo op either way, but I knew the angler would be utilizing her guide to hold this one. I gladly obliged.

We hadn't been out in a while - hope we can get out again soon.

(thanks Lund Explorer for the push)

That's awesome A-Jay. You and your bride had quite a day. That's a real nice pike for sure, she must have been thrilled to finally get that one in? AHHH, why does it sound like she out-fished you? BAH-WAH-HAHAHAHA

Seriously, congrats to you both, that sounds like quite the experience to be able to fish with your wife.

Nice trip and great story. Wish my wife would go with me. Nice looking pike too!

very nice northern. Any bigger, try cradling the fish, like this. Unless of course, it's bound to be the main course (pike is VERY tasty, and weeding out middle sized fish is good). That smallie by your wife is a slob, and that's a great picture of her.

OK - I hear you on the "cradle". As only a few ever make it to the grease, I should and will utilize that technique in the future. Speaking of a cradle, I sure would like to find a way to use one when fishing alone to harness the larger fish. Not allot of room in the Old Town for a massive net. A cradle would store much easier. Both the fish and I would appreciate a more secure method of holding and subduing these guys even if it is only temporarily.

Cradles are IMPOSSIBLE, unless you fish in a bog stable boat with one or two helpers...

I rely on a FishGrip tool. Most fish are unhooked and released in the water. Unless its a tank, or it's headed back for release into crisco bay. The beauty of the tool is you can start the reviving process while you are unhooking. They just need to be held underwater, upright. You'll feel them tense up when they are ready for the release.

I don't want to upstage your post with my own pics, so if anyone wants pics of the tool in action, and the process, just PM me.

And for nets, check these out: http://www.leveragelandingnet.com/

I've got two, and they're great.

Sweet trip & pictures too. I'm glad you got Lynn out to do a little fishing/catching. That's a nice smallie & pike that you guided. You will remember that outing all winter long.

Thanks for the info and the links J.

I have a small Boga that I used back when I fished in the Briney Sea.

I may start carrying that.

Nice A Jay!! The third pic would go great for your profile background on Bassresource!!Especially if can get it big enough without tile. Nice and glad y'all a good time out. My wife would done the same if even catch a toothy fish. Very nice pike and bass. Did you do any fishing or all your wife? How many did she land for the day?

Thanks - As the dedicated guide for the day, I was hoping to put my wife on a trophy fish. That lake has produced a couple of plus sized smb in recent years (especially for Lynn) and we thought the conditions were favorable for at least one more. We didn't really count fish but the net stayed wet most of the afternoon.

I will admit to tossing out a big swimbait a few times, but I was quickly reminded of my guiding duties; also I think the word "poacher" might have been uttered in my direction, so that didn't last long.

We didn't get into the bigger fish we were hoping for, but The Company was the Best.

Should of told her guide duties involves casting out as well!! But that was nice and both enjoyed it so that matters. Dedicating her the day. Is that pike her biggest?

I just also check your profile nice background!!

Turns out that's the largest pike either of us have taken on that lake - it was 31". But her PB pike was a 34" beast taken from a lake in the next county.

Great story and pics. You're pretty studly holding the pike like that... I always go the safe and wimpy way with grips.

Thanks - that pike did most of his battling in the water (and in the net) and was pretty tuckered out after a fairly lengthy battle on 6lb line. By photo time he gassed; he did however recover boat-side to swim off and fight another day.
