Trailer Barb On Jig Not Molding Properly

i managed to pour 4 perfect jigs, and 15 ones that werent fully poured at the trailer barb. i tried heating the mold more and it didnt help. i noticed that my lee melter isnt pouring as fast as it did for the first 4, i may have let it run too low and am wondering if i caused the spout to get plugged up and due to the decreased pouring rate it wont mold that barb properly, is that possible?

Did you flux your lead before you started pouring? If you didnt that causes your pot to get clogged which pours slower and cools down and creates air pockets while you pour. Another thing you should do is smoke the mold with a candle. I also heat my hooks @ 250 degrees for 10min before pouring. Hope this helps

Other than the things mentioned above, you can try force injecting the lead, and try cracking the mold with a business card. Many times this will help. If you want really goood pours, use mold release it is like putting eggs on teflon, the lead just flows out. It is 100 times better than smoking a mold without all the mess. Smoking a mold leaves oil residue and I've yet to have any success with it, however some have as mentioned above. Also always keep a full pot of lead, as the weight forces better flow.

To add to what Cadman said. You may need to clean the spout also. I have to clean mine time to time. You can drain the pot and then clean.

What type of mold release do you use? I'd like to try some but don't want to get the wrong stuff and break something or hurt myself.

Yeah Cadman what do you use? How long does it last?

If you have to drain the pot I use emery cloth on the spouts rod to clean off the debris and for the hole I use a drill bit and twist it with my fingers. Make sure its all cool.

Another thing which can help while pouring and getting clogs, heat the tip of the pot with a propane torch for a few seconds then let out some lead into a container. This often lets the clog run out so you can continue pouring.

I don't have a drill bit small enough to work on the tip so I use a spinnerbait wire and clean it while it is hot.

Bluebasser and Siebert Outdoors, I am so sorry I didn't reply to the mold release. I didn't see the replies to this post I have been out fishing a lot of tournaments with my (3) new colored jigs which are killing the bass here. I will post later tonight with the info I promise.

OK guys here is the scoop on this. I have been pouring for about 8 years and have just recently within the last 2 years heard about this stuff. I am very sceptical when it comes to trying new things, especially when I don't know anyone else using it or commenting on it. So this one day I was having problems pouring this one mold and it was really teeing me off. So I thought I would finally try this stuff that was recommended by another guy on another forum. The stuff is called "Drop Out" by Frankford Arsenal. To make a long story short, I tried it and I wish I had used this many years ago. It would have saved a many bad hot summer days pouring. Honestly this stuff works guys. What it is, is a spray that you spray in the cavity or cavities of any mold on both halves. Clean your cavities with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner. Let it dry and then shake the can of mold release and then spray it in the mold cavities. All you want to do is make sure you get a good even coating. The mold release after it is sprayed on is a flat gray color. Wait 5 minutes to dry and pour away. It is really like putting an egg on teflon. As you pour, you will see the lead flow freely into the mold. One application will last for about 400-500 pours or until you see the silver of the aluminum mold start to shine through. Then it's time to apply again. I have had a can of this for 1-1/2 years and I pour every week. A little goes a long way so don't spray on the whole can. You can buy this at Barlow's, Do-It or many other places. I buy mine at Zeiner's because their molds are always cheaper than the other places. You have to call to get the deal usually. Finally for all of those that asked about my special custom colored jigs I used this year, I will post them here on this forum so watch for them. Some truly new colors that literally kicked some bass butt.

I'll second what cadman posted re: Drop-Out mold release. The stuff really works! I've been casting jigs and bullets for 25 years and I wouldn't know what to do without Drop-out.

Frankford Arsenal makes another product that I recommend highly, CleanCast fluxing compound. It works much better than paraffin, rosin or anything else that I've ever tried. Clean lead makes a huge difference in the quality of your pours.

Bluebasser86, the easiest tool I've found for cleaning the spout on my Lee Production pot is torch tip cleaners. Get 'em at Home Depot or anyplace that sells welding supplies.

Trying to pour small jigs with 3/0 and 4/0 Sickle hooks that I tie fish hair on for small mouth bass. This may well make it go from 25% good pours to at least 65% or better.

That drop out stuff does make a huge difference, at least it did for me. We poured 300 jigs the other day (mabye not a lot for some guys but that's a ton for me) and they poured and came out of the mold much easier.
