Super User Hi Salenity Posted September 25, 2011 Super User Posted September 25, 2011 I am starting to acquire a small arsenal of casting rods/reels but I am looking to get a couple of new Spinning rods (1 for now). I am looking for a fairly all around rod to throw 3/8 oz and smaller plastics and maybe a mepps spinner now and then. I plan on using 20# power pro with this set up. Opinions on this rod= Powell Max Wacky Rig Spinning Rod 6'10 Medium $139.99 Quote
Super User Marty Posted September 25, 2011 Super User Posted September 25, 2011 I don't know anything about that rod, but rods in the 6'6" to 7' range, fast action and medium power make excellent all-purpose sticks. Quote
The Rooster Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 If I only had one spinning rod I'd want 8# mono on it. The second one would get the braid, but that's just how I see it. Don't know about that rod either, but Marty gave excellent advice for an all around spinning rod. Medium power/fast action tip, in about 6'6" or 7' length. I'd add to this to get a rod that has a stripper guide (the first one from the reel) that is large enough for your thumb to pass through. I've found that when I get a rod that has a smaller first guide it really cuts into casting distance due to line friction as you cast. Again, that's just how I see it. Quote

I agree I am trying to replace my 2 older spinning rods 1 is 7' and has 15# flouro (hate it) on it & the other is 6' with 10# 832. I think that I will replace the 7' rod with the 6'10'' Powell rod unless someone has another idea on a rod . Quote
Dockhead Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I don't know that rod personally, but my all-purpose spinning rod right now is a 7' mh Powell. Throws unweighted worms well and I toss up to an 1/8 ounce texas rig with it. (Anything heavier I will be using a baitcaster.) You might want to consider a reel with 2 spools, then you can do the braid on one and 8 or 10 pound mono/flouro on the other. (Some people just throw a leader on the braid, if they want the "light line factor" as well as the advantages of the braid.) Quote
Bronzeback Scuttler Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 I have been fishing the Powell 6103 rod for about a year or so. I don't think I would consider it an all round rod. Although it's rated for 6-12lb line and 1/8-3/8 oz lures it feels more like a MH than a medium. The extra fast action transitions to a solid backbone about 1/4 of the way down from the tip. Don't get me wrong, it's a great rod for soft plastics, I just don't think the tip is light enough to load properly to throw Mepps spinners long distances. For all round light lures a 2 power rod would be more suitable. Quote

The tip is perfect for stationary single hook lures. Mepps spinners come in all sizes though, no? If you find one that loads the rod properly, the OP should be okay. I have thrown poppers and other treble-hooked/ moving lures with my Powell, but that's not what it excels at, nor is it meant to, I think. P.S. I have 6/30 Samurai braid with a leader on it. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Yeah, the 6103 Powell Endurance is a little heavier then it is sounds in the write up. But, a 4" senko can be throw a long way and you will have enough backbone to drill in the hook! Quote
Bronzeback Scuttler Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 The Powell 6103 that I was referring to is the TW Powell Max Wacky Rig spinning rod. As a comparison I can cast an unweighted 4 1/4" BPS sticko a lot further with with my NRX 852s than I can with the Powell, same reel, same line on both. I realize the NRX is 3 inches longer and as such could account for a bit more distance, but the lighter tip allows the rod to load light weight baits and really launch them out there. As you approach the upper lure weight rating the casting distance seems more even between the 2 rods. I wouldn't hesitate to throw 1/2 oz baits on the Powell but don't think the 852s would handle them as well. The Powell is rated as 3 power rod, the 852s is a 2 power. Both are extra fast action rods.
