D4u2s0t Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I've been trying some crankbaits, and all I seem to be getting is some small perch. Sometimes it's every cast that they take it. I have used the bomber mainly. First off, what makes a perch think it can eat this thing, it's about 10 times as wide as it's mouth lol. But that being said, is that typical of waters that have lots of perch? I watch sunny's follow the crank all the way as well, but have never caught a bass. It's a bit of a nuisance taking a treble hook out of a perch's mouth that can barely fit the hook to begin with. I should have said somewhere in there that this is water where there's lots of bass. I know they're in there. Quote
cabullwinkle Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Boy that is odd. I would consider throwing something else if that were happening to me. Does that pattern hold true all over the water, or just one spot? There is a lake near me that has that similar pattern, where perch are in one location in tons of numbers. But there are bass also. cyph3r Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 maybe try a larger size? or is it already 2" plus crankbait? Quote
mrlitetackle Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 i feel your pain....... on one outing about 3 months ago i was using a fat free shad, and subsequently caught tons of painted bream and only a few bass, the ratio was likely around 4 to 1.... and i wondered the same thing, "why the heck are these things trying to eat this" their darn mouths could just barely fit the hook inside. D4u2s0t Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 it's all over the lake. with the lip the crankbait is about 3", and it's fat. Like I said i'm surprised the perch could even get the hook in it's mouth. We also have a very high concentration of perch and sunny though. When I say a high concentration, you can catch them just about every single cast on a live worm. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 The sunfish did the same with me during their spawn (though not nearly as bad), and Crappie do it at my lake at the end of september... I don't know the perch's spawning cycles, but maybe they're going through a spawn and protecting their areas. Or they're really really hungry. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 22, 2009 Super User Posted July 22, 2009 i dunno whats up but i'd tie a crank on a UL rod and quit complaining Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 22, 2009 Super User Posted July 22, 2009 I would try fishing shallower. Quote
outlawguy540 Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 I live in VA but I had the same problem this spring. Perch , bluegill, crappie hitting large baits. They hit anything from 2" crankbaits to 4" buzzbaits. I caught alot of good eating size crappie (catch and release but I have eaten crappie) 12" -15". Its all fun to me, I love catching bass, but its still fun to have something different to hit and reel in. Enjoy it, atleast your catchin something. Quote
