I replace mine with either Gamakatsu EWG or Owners. I use them because they are sharp!! :D

I like VMC's. They're sharp and fairly inexpensive for someone on a budget with a lot of hooks to change. I've heard about people having problems with them getting straightened but I've never had a problem even when I accidently catch big catfish or hybrids.

I've had a preference, but I don't know why, for the round bend style of trebles and have been satisfied with a number of brands, including VMC, Gamakatsu and Lazer Sharp. Not that it's any of my business, but why not check the hooks first before replacing them? Many crankbaits come with lousy hooks, but others come with pretty decent hooks which will do the job just fine with a couple of strokes with a hook file.

all the cranks i have ordered are strike king i read all the reviews and the only bad reviews they had were all on the hooks plus want to go with red front hooks would rather go ahead and change them than lose a nice fish because of them

Unless the hooks are super cheap and dull, I don't see a reason to replace them. Your not going to lose a fish because of your treble hook unless it is worn out but it's your money.

I don't replace hooks until it's absolutely needed, I'm lazy that way. So many of my trebles are not only rusted and mangled but may have only 1or 2 hooks left, they still catch fish. When I do replace I use 4x hooks, not fussy on brand.

I have used the gamagatsu's with good success however about a year ago a friend (Hook Set on this forum) introduced me to the Mustad KVD Triple Grip hooks and I love them. They are a shorter shanked hook so you can most of the time bump to a larger size without the hook hanging down any further. I have yet to have a fish come unhooked since switching and for comparison my son and I were recently fishing a tournament and we were both throwing Bill Norman Deep little N crankbaits, he had 3 to come off on the factory hook. We were using identical rods reels and line and I would consider him as good a fisherman as myself.

The more I use this hook, the more of a fan I become. I'm not a huge crankbait guy, but the few I throw ALL have these hooks.

It depends on what the stock hooks are. What baits are they? Some are fine right out of the box, and some are terrible.

I agree, wholly. The KVD hook is next to the VMC in my book, but for the money I'll buy the Owner ST-36. Now, too, you can get it in a size five for jerkbaits.

Owner ST-41 2x size 1. Overkill especially on KVD squares but it hasn't seem to effect the bite for me and I have not lost many fish at all since I changed them. Yes, they are a little big and tangle every once in awhile but I can deal with that considering my hook up ratio has increased x10!

Had an issue losing fish on a spook so I gave the KVDs a shot. Generally try not to fall into the KVD Lemming Crowd, but these things are sticky and I have yet to lose a fish with them.

VMC sure set hooks will land you more bass. The back treble has one shank that is a wider gap.

One of the great mysteries of life is what happened to 1 sock in the drier when I put 2 in there, similar mystery befuddled me with sure set hooks. On several occasions xraps with sure set hooks started to run funny in the water, they were perfect from the start. Hooks seemed to be in perfect condition, as an experiment I changed the sure set hook to a traditional treble. Problem was solved, the xraps started to run true again, I have done this several times. I'll buy those xraps again, Dicks likes to put the sure set ones on sale.

When I do change trebles I use only VMC 4x saltwater grade even for my freshwater fishing.

IMO the sure sets are some of the worst hooks ever made..Very weak hooks that will break if put under any type of pressure; I have had them brake just taking them out of the fish's mouth.

Borderline worst hook ever made for moving baits. I've bent and broken more of the VMC than I have of ANY stock hook. The standard VMC 9650 or 9651 is a fine hook. Sure set? Total and complete trash.

I use more Gamakatsu Round Bend than anything else anymore.

Best treble hook I have ever used comes stock on mirrorlures ( I don't know who makes them), they just don't break, even under the rigors of hard fighting jacks and bluefish. I've had blues bite the hooks right off other brands. I use mirror twitchbaits for bass fishing sometimes, that hook just ain't gonna break.

Gotta go with the Gamakatsu EWG's. Great hooks and great price. These hooks flat out stick fish! I didn't used to think it was necessary to replace hooks on my crank baits until i started tournament fishing... Now it's not even an option! I don't have a single crank bait with stock hooks anymore.
