Bass XL Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Jigs jigs and jigs. Now don't get wrong, I love fishing jerk baits, cranks, and spinnerbaits in the fall...but my catching consistency is always higher with the jig. Although fish gorge themselves on shad this time of year, a fish won't pass up a craw fish it goes right in front of them. It could be that the lakes I fish get pretty heavy pressure, but it works, and that's the bottom line. Next time you see schooling shad, flip a jig right in there and get those bigguns hanging out underneath the pack! Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted September 21, 2011 Super User Posted September 21, 2011 Jigs, Spinnerbaits and small crankbaits Jigs - In early fall I will be fishing big jigs with lots of action. I'm looking for fish as they are making their fall migration shallow and towards the back of the creek arms and pockets. Once I've determined that the fish have moved shallow I will switch to either a Spinnerbait or a small crankbait. And cover water untill I find a concentration of fish. Then I will slow way down and go back to the jig for the big bite. If they aren't on the jig or we've had a cold front move through in the past day or so I will go all the way to the back of the creeks and look for the muddy water. Then you will see me chunking a big spinnerbait with a twin tail trailer and hitting every piece of cover that I can. Most of the time if my trolling motor isn't kicking up mud I'm fishing to deep. endless Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Let me ask when comes to jigs. I always think of trees or heavy structure. When y'all fish jigs like in the fall what is a must go to and do? I myself I am really trying to understand jigs and technique but my bites only came from trees and on the first drop. I have no ideal how to work them besides watching Senko_77 video. So I always end up putting the rod down. If someone can give me a quick run down on jigs far as fall bites go. What to look for or are you just casting out like regular baits and bringing back in towards the boat? Swim jig or pitching jig? I might be going out Saturday and possibly tomorrow. If go out tomorrow will be the best time to work on a jig since must of the lake ranges shallow with allot of branches trees washed up on the shorelines that cause me to get hung up everytime I try to wacky. Endless: Since that day in Powhatan, I've been casting and flipping jigs, but more so swimming jigs w/ rage craw trailer. Swimming it slow, bumping the bottom and occassionally dropping it dead and letting it sit. Or I'll pop it off the bottom and sink and sit, before repeating. I prefer casting jigs over any other, for all applications. All I change is the size for depth. Still like the T-rig craws and white/chart spinnerbaits w/ double willow in the fall. Quote

Good questions. To be quite honest with you, in the fall I primarily target the same combination of structure: A cove with a defined creek channel, right off the main river channel, and with plenty of structure. When I say structure, the more the merrier...lots of laydowns, stick ups, brush piles. This combination of structure will hold fish throughout the whole fall season, and to me, is THE best place you can fish. The cover in the cove gives the fish plenty of ambush points to catch any kind of unsuspecting prey that may wonder by. That being said, I'll flip, pitch, swim, cast, and hop the jig next to any cover, whether it be a laydown, brush pile, or a creek channel. These fish are hungry, let them tell you how they want it. No presentation is a bad presentation. Fall is a very forgiving season due to the fact that these fish are gorging. Experiment and figure out what those fish want! Quote
