Super User clayton86 Posted September 18, 2011 Super User Posted September 18, 2011 Me and my grenadier were talking this week about guns we want after deployment and we both want a semi .308(7.62) and we've been bouncing around basicly a built ar10 by dpms 2 diffrent styles in what we like but same basic gun or a sprinfield M14. Both would be sweet rifles the ar will be cheaper but that M14 is just nasty. I personally think the AR10 would be the best bang for your buck plus there no end to what you can do with it. The M14 well its still a tack driver and old military guns are sweet but I think at 1000M/yds the AR platform will run circles around the M14. I mean we could always go bolt action but these are just 2 guns we've both always wanted. What do u guys think between the 2 there gonna be used for both target shooting and hunting where legal with the right magazines. Quote
matstone7 Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I haven't fooled with an M14 so my answer might be a bit one-sided. Go with the AR. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 18, 2011 Super User Posted September 18, 2011 Springfield Armory M1A or M21 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted September 18, 2011 Author Super User Posted September 18, 2011 An M21 would be extremly sick but there like 3000 bucks that's a bit much the M1A(M14) is like 1200-2000. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted September 20, 2011 Author Super User Posted September 20, 2011 Scar 17 That would be sweet but I don't want a tactical rifle just a semi auto tack driver that's why I was leaning towards the ar platform I was gonna do a heavy fluted barrel, freefloating hand guards, custom trigger, fixed stock, completly flat top ect. I don't see the need for all these tac rifles and shot guns you will never use I mean seriously all these tac shot guns people buy because there house MIGHT be robed half the people buying them have never fired a round and if it came to go time would forget to **** the gun or work the safty let alone squeeze the trigger 99% of the time landing THEM in jail not the burgler. And tac rifles yeah cuz everyone does room clearing lol id rather spend the money on a gun that will actually be used. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted September 20, 2011 Author Super User Posted September 20, 2011 That perfectly describes a Springfield Armory’s National Match or Super Match M1A I tried getting on there website but can't because I don't have flash on my phone and I don't have a computor so I couldent even check them out. jdw174 Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I'd have to vote for the SA M1A in the match version. First tactical rifle match I fired I won with a borrowed M1A. Wasn't going to enter at all (it was a side match at my IPSC club), but one of the guys talked me into it and loaned me the rifle and ammo. I've had a soft spot for the M1A ever since. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 The AR-10 and M14/M1A are both proven designs, either will certainly work for what you're looking to do. I've never been real crazy about the DPMS rifles I've handled, I do think there are better offerings in the same price range, RRA comes to mind. Are you gonna mount a scope? I know good M1A scope mounts are quite expensive, something to consider. If those are the two you're set on, and you can swing the price, the Springer is a better built rifle. Quote

Definitely mounting a scope sad part Is good scopes are more then the rifles there mounted on or at least half or three quarters price Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 11, 2012 Super User Posted April 11, 2012 So many different 308's to choose from?? I just picked up a chinese norinco m14s in 308. Its like new condition with a free trade in i had + $371 OTD i got it home. With its 5100 forged receiver and chrome lined bore i'm happy. She headspaced on the low side plus i fixed the loose op rod guide block and installed the national match op rod spring guide and heavy duty wolf op rod spring too. I hope it can out shoot my russian izmash saiga in 308, with a 16'' barrel. My 308 saiga's benchrested at 100yds using surplus south frican 308 ball ammo will shoot 1 1/2'' groups at that distance with the orginal iron sights.(no scope). I want to shoot my m14s with no scope first to see how it shoots with the orginal iron sights. Then i'm going to scope it but i'm not sure which scope to purchase. I was looking at the higher priced Millet scope?? Once i scope the m14s I want to scope my saiga in 308 with the 22'' barrel using the russian scope from kalinka. Then the dual will begin between them. I was on my way to purchase a new m1a when i spotted the new russian saiga's for $289 in 308. I'm glad i purchased the new saiga's. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 29, 2012 Super User Posted April 29, 2012 BTW; If the chinese norinco shoots great i just may go for a ground up build. This way i get what i want starting with a forged receiver. The AR design with all its faults plus if the SHTF the time in cleaning it just may not be available. Quote

I think the M1A is the better deal. Mag's and spare parts are more available than the AR series. Only draw back to your M1A is you can have it in 308 or 308. Your AR series is a lot wider. Anything based off a 308 case from 243 to 7.62 X47L There is a reason why all the M14's were pulled from retirement. Quote
JamesD Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I'm a springfield fan, but that's simply because I loath the AR/m16 platform. In terms of reliability and performance in day to day 100-600 yard shooting, the Springfield M1A series of rifles surpass the the AR based weapons every time. That's due to their action and how they function though. Now, if you're interested in 1,000+yd shooting, a DPMS, Armalite, or RockRiverArms AR .308 is the way to go. A nice 22 or 24" barrel, a long range optic, match-grade-ammunition, and either a bipod or shooting rest will get you that performance with ease. Now, the M21 can still perform very very well at that distance, but you have already claimed it's out of your price range. A buddy of mine on FSB runs a gun shop and they have an online store. He retails a LOT of stuff, and if you don't see it on the site, call and talk to him. http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/ If you're interested in an AR10 style rifle, and cost affordability, consider building one of your own. You can usually save a few hundred dollars doing this, at least that way you'll stick around the 900-1200 range even with shipping. Quote
fishingkidPA Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 even though you probably already bought one, you should check out the ruger gunsite scout rifle. Quote
Dave P Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The only one I have personal experience with is the SA M14, so it get's my vote. Quote
