Looking to get another jig rod for deeper waters..I am looking at the 7'2 Cumara MH casting or the 7'4 dobyns champ extreme MH. I own a few Cumaras, but only spinning so I don't know how the casting rods feel.

Anyone have experience with these rods?

Cumara all the way. I've got both of the rods mentoned and fish the CUmara. I actually fish the Cumara over my GLX 854.

I would classify the DX as the better rod but at $100 more it should be. The DX may be heavier than the Cumara but balance better. If you prefer split vs full grips or cork vs foam that could also factor into your decision. If I was making the choice and could afford it I would definitely go with the DX but they're both great rods. :D

One thing you may want to consider is the DX744 (Heavy power) instead. I don't own them in DX but do have a Champion 733c and 734c. The 3 power rods make a great senko and lighter jig (3/8 and under) but if you will primarily be fishing 1/2oz+ or 3/8 in/around cover definitely go with the 4 power rod. If you fish some real thick cover the 5 power may even be better. My 734c is one of my favorite rods and very versatile: jigs of all kinds, t-rigs, paddletails, spinnerbaits, etc. This was my first Dobyns rod and really made me appreciate how well-balanced most of their rods are. I know own several

Either way I think you'll be happy with your choice--they're two great rods.

Even though both are 4 power rods, the DX744 fishes a little heavier than than the 734 because it has a faster action. The 744 is close to an extra fast, and the 734 is somewhere in between mod-fast and fast. The 744 is well suited for casting 1/4-3/4oz jigs into the 10'+ range, but I don't think it's heavy enough to be a pitching stick. The 735 is a very good option for pulling double duty, pitching and casting jigs, if you're interested. I haven't fished or handled the 743, but I wouldn't want a jigging rod lighter than the 744 for casting jigs, especially heavier(1/2oz+) jigs fished deep. I actually wish it were a tad more powerful, like the equivalent of a 4.25 power.

BassThumb,

More great info, much appreciated. Is the cumara underpowered? I might take a long look at the CUC-74H

No, it's not underpowered at all. It's on the verge of being overpowered for 1/2-5/8 ounce jigs. It's positively beastly for deep jigs because of how much line speed and force you can generate; the rod has a huge amount of power and lifting strength in the butt, with a solid enough tip to fish a heavy jig efficiently. The thing I didn't like about the Dobyns is that it isn't fast enough to hop a jig, the tip is too soft and you end up dragging the jig, or you have to hop it a great distance which becomes a pull. The cumara will hop a one ounce jig in 25 feet of water moving only minimally, the Dobyns can't do that.

What he said was spot on. Unless you're using finesse jigs a 4 power rod is the way to go. The 734c is probably going to fall right in between the 72MH and 72MHXF. It will have similar power in the butt like the 72MHXF but a softer tip.

The Dobyns rods are definitely not an extremely fast action (especially the Savvy/Champ as BassThumb said). I like my rods to load very easily in a cast and prefer the slightly slower action for a variety of reasons. The action comes down to personal preference IMO, whichever one works for you. Both great rods, hold them both in store with a reel and see which is more comfortable...you can't go wrong!

I have a Cumara 7'2 MH/F, a Savvy 734c and a Champion 735c. I have fished the DX744 and 745 as well. I wouldn't even consider the Cumara for jig fishing, especially 10+ feet. I use mine for small texas rigs and occasionaly a very finesse jig, like an 1/8 oz.

I would take a look at the 744/745, moreso the 745. If you're dead-set on a Cumara, go with the 7'4 jig rod.

I just think the CUC-72MH is waaaaayyyy too light for jig fishing in general. I think a 3/8 oz jig in less than 5 feet is about as much as the rod can handle, at least for me.

That's well-put, the 4 power rods are basically right in between the MH and MH/XF Cumaras. If you're using 1/2+ oz jigs, DX745 all the way!

The 7.2 cumaras are pretty powerful. Ive fished 1/2 jigs 15ft down a tree and horsed some decent fish out. But both are a good choice.

You're not comparing apples to apples. The CUC72MH and CUCX72 are completely different beasts. The MHF is tailor made a senko/Ika rod. The XF is the jig rod, and it will beat the pants off every Dobyns I've ever handled in terms of moving a jig.

Did you buy the rod yet?

Oh, in his original post he said MH/F. I've fished the XF and it felt tip heavy and kind of dead in my hands.

IMO of course.
