Crank Bait Depth Question

Hi do these crank baits go all the way to the bottom, or do they swim mostly mid depth or near surface when retrieving them? I know they make diving crank baits but I'm asking about regular billed crank baits like a Rebel teeny -r or Rapala shad rap no sinker for example. Do the bass on the bottom usually come up in depth to attack these baits or should I go with a targeted depth specific crank bait? Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

The depth is usually written on the box, the actual depth can vary depending on line size, speed, and distance thrown but it's typically in the range listed on the box

It all depends on what your approach is and what structure your fishing. But for the most part you want your crank bait at the depth of the structure your fishing.

I normally fish crank baits in gravel/clay bottomed flats, drop offs, large rocks, log/stump fields. With a lot of these your looking for a reaction strike when you bump your crank off the structure.

So when you look at some crankbaits you'll want to get some that will cover various depths, certain online retailers will split it up for you into 0-4 5-9 and 10+.

When you fine tune it even farther it gets into square billed and wobble width etc.

just starting to get into crankbait fishing myself from my understanding so far as a general guide you want the bait to be able to bump the bottom so if fishing in say 5' of water you would want a crank that would run 5-6 in 10' 10-12 you dont want to dig trenches in the bottom just bump it but this will not always be the case like when the fish are suspended just a basic guide line hope this helps

I fish DD22's in 3-10ft of water all thru the warmer months on into late fall. A big bait really diggin and stirrin up stuff can really create a reaction bite at times. DD22's are my choice because they can back up out of obstructions when you hit an obstacle and stop. Each bait usually have its time and place with many of them overlapping and performing double duties.

Bottom contact is important with crankbaits to get the most action out of them. Be sure not to use to deep specific lure for what depth your fishing so the bait won't lose its action.
