gates52 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I took the spool out of my daiwa exceler because I was switching lines and now the spool wont spin when I put the reel back together. I've probably taken this thing apart about 3 times. The reel is just a bit over a year old. When I turn the handle I can see some part inside the reel which connects to the spool spinning when I have the spool out. The spool will also turn when the thumbar is engaged and I manually try to spin the spool. Could lack of oil on my reel cause this issue or is this something bigger? Could I have lost a piece? I was going to buy a new rod today at dicks and now this happens...I was hoping to fish with a new rod today. Thanks guys Quote

Thanks guys Sounds like something came loose - possibly the pinion gear came misaligned, or maybe a bearing went bad. Sounds a little more complicated than an oil problem. Quote
MuffinMan Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Try to find a manual or instructions on that reel online and see what parts you may be missing or what you may have put on wrong, if this doesnt work then id get it repaired depending on the value of the reel or just buy another. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 13, 2011 Super User Posted September 13, 2011 Remove side plate Remove the spool Press the thumbar Replace the spool Replace the side plate Turn crank to reingage the spool Quote
gates52 Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Well it was something stupid like I expected....I dont remember doing this but I had my drag loosened all the way so it was basically on free spool so nothing happened. But it's all fixed and oiled now. Man I feel like an idiot. Quote

When I store my reels for any length of time I loosen the drag all the way and I always forget to tighten back untill I try to fish with it. Then I have a "Duh moment" and move on. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted September 17, 2011 Super User Posted September 17, 2011 Yep, I loosen the spool tension knob and the drag after every season's cleanout. Can't tell you how many time I reared back and let it loose on my first cast of the season and spiderwebbed or lost a fish on a hook set...LOL...I'm dumb more often than not every spring. Quote

Haha thats funny, I guess we all do stupid things from time to time. In my case I'd much rather feel like an idiot than have to buy a new reel. Now it works and it's all oiled up. I never oiled a reel before, at least I learned a few things. Quote
