FishnMan Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I fish the Elkhorn Creek (one mile short of being a river) that is mostly 2-8fft deep and has a lot of structure as well as a very bug reputation for its smallmouth reputation, I caught 3 yesterday on a green pumpkin/watermelon 5inch senko, fishing them slow on the bottom in a very structure filled area. I usually catch 4 and 5 lb largemouth here, but ended up landing a smallie close to three pounds that was crazy aggressive. Needless to say, I love catching largemouth bass, but there is no comparison as to the feeling you get when you reel in a smallie, even the small ones are a fun fight. My question is, what do I look for...what bait do I fish with, how to work it, and how do I rig it? I don't have a fish finder, and the waters are very calm with almost nO current to drag me downstream. The creek is roughly 25-40 yards wide and no deeper than 7ft deep in this area. Thanks for the help y'all! Quote

basspimple Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 where about elkhorn do you fish? i grew up fishing and wading the elkhorn! it really is fantastic place to fish for smallmouth. as far as lures, one of the best to use on the ol' horn is a 3" brown ad orange grub on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz jig head. cast close to strucure or cover, let it sink and reel slowly back. works everytime for me!if that dont work ill usually use a small tube jig like a strike king bitsy tube or gitzit, some sort of green color will usually do the trick. good luck!
