Well, this year I got stuck with the disciplinarian as my Chemistry teacher, He's 52 and is a Vegan and is one of the TOUGHEST, and meanest cross country coach ever according to my friends. He absolutely hates any sort of fishing, even if it is catch and release And insists that he learned with his biology major that fish feel pain and that he should stick a hook in my mouth and ask me how it feels............ I tried showing him a scientofic study I found on Google scholar and out it on his desk and he read the title and said "get this crap off my desk" and then started going on and on about how that article was covering up for what fisherman are doing to bass.......

Pour some gulp alive in one of the corners of his classroom.

Catch a carp, let it sit out in the sun for 3 days, then stuff it one of his desk drawers.

The reason he is so ornery is lack of meat in his diet. A couple of cheeseburgers would change his perspective...maybe.

Seriously though arguing with him is a waste of your time. You can't win the argument based on whether or not fish feel pain. They certainly feel sensation. Whether their brains processes that as pain as we understand it depends on who you talk to. The argument is whether you have the right to do it. You do. He can eat tofu and hug trees, animals, and insects if he wants to. You can fish, hunt, shoot, drive a pickup, and howl at the moon if you want to. This America for crying out loud. You will find plenty of egg-headed teachers and professors who are educated far above their ability to understand. Take what you can use and leave the rest.

EDIT: I just looked at your profile. The pickup will have to wait until you get your license. And one more thing: 52 is not that old!

If you knew ahead of time he hated fishing and fisherman, then how in the heck did he find out you fished. Keep your pie hole shut and don't bring up the subject to him or in front him.

The way I see it just leave more fish for the rest of us.

What he said.

You're in school, learn

Trying to have a conversation with this teacher is like a cattleman trying to make a point at sheepherders convention, he can't win, nor can you. He may or may not be right about pain, personally I think they do, but that does not detour me from fishing.

This teacher has but 1 objective, to educate you in the classroom about chemistry, discussions about fishing shouldn't even be on the radar screen. You didn't get stuck with him, he got stuck with you.

No.

But while at LSU I did have a prof for a three-hour evening real estate course that did not let us out of class at the half-way point so we could go and watch Pete Maravich play basketball for LSU.

On a few occassions we left, anyway.

Hey, it was Pete Maravich. The Pistol. Greatest college basketball player, ever. ;)

Don't talk to him about fishing, don't even mention it.Even if he does, don't even say anything. It's none of his business.

And don't make it your business trying to prove him wrong....You can't change his opinion just like he can't change yours. It's better to leave it alone.

Tell him GOD was a fisherman......

I bet THAT will REALLY get him going..

That's what I was wondering. Why create controversy over something as trivial as this? Pass the class, get your credits, and move on.

I mean, you are going to confront people of all sorts in your life, that despise other things you love, so unless there's some REAL stand to take, why would they even know about it?

Usually see at least one post like this every year in a hunting forum I browse and not in every case is the professor a vegan. They usually just don't have the stomach to harvest their own meal.

It is true that your job is to learn but his job is to teach chemistry not promote his idololgy on fishing or any other matter. If it continues discuss this calmly with the principle and if that doesn't work get your parents involved with the superintendant or the school board.

There are many studies regarding a fishes ability to percieve pain from many with credentials likely far greater than his that say the opposite of his view. I repeat his job is to teach chemistry!

And second place isn't even close. What the Pistol did in three years is utterly amazing, especially when one considers how much effort the other teams gave trying to stop him...box n 1 defenses, sometimes even triangle & 2....with 2 guys simply trying to shut down Maravich. Amazing.

Dink, Don't let anyone spoil your passion for the outdoors and fishing. This coach doesn't see the world as you do and you don't see things his way. The lession to learn is agree to disagree and move on. Unfortunately you are going to run across people like this more as you continue your education.

tell him you saw the light! You are now a vegan and a card carrying PETA member and think all fisherman are knuckle draggers. Suck up boy make the grade then tell him to kiss your In-Fisherman subscription carrying card carrying NRA arse.

Ah, high school. Where small conflicts appear to loom large.

Don't worry about him. He's not willing to listen to your side of it, so there's nothing compelling you to listen to his. Instead, focus on chemistry and nothing more.

Words of wisdom. I would also add that you'll never convert a vegan/PETA type to your way of thinking when it comes to fishing and hunting. It's a waste of time.

Almost as bad is growing up in a small town where one of the police officers was just as addicted to hunting and fishing as I was. You cannot imagine how many times I was "pulled over" by this guy. Not for a traffic violation, but simply for the latest report on what was biting, or how I'd done bunny hunting.

It was soooooo much fun when someone would call my Mom to explain how they had seen me suffering another traffic stop!
