Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted September 10, 2011 Super User Posted September 10, 2011 The more I think about it the less satisfied I am with deer hunting. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy it. I just get bored with it I guess. Gun hunting for deer is out for me now. I don't find a challenge to it anymore. I just can't find the fun in blasting a deer from over two hundred yards. Now stalking them with my longbow or horsebow is still pretty fun for me. Still I want to hunt something bigger. I'm thinking black bear in Tennessee, could give me the thrill I seek. However, I'm not exactly sure which of my rifles to go with though. Buying a new firearm is out due to the money involved with said investment, cutting into my fishing budget. Which takes priority over any other hobbies. Both my bows shoot at over a hundred pounds, I'm not quite sure that would be sufficient though. I don't recall having ever heard of bow hunting for bear before. Rifle wise I have my trusty .308 Remington 700, and my .338 Barrett M98B. Personally I would prefer to use one of my bows. However, If the bow is not sufficient I hope one of these two rifles will work. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 10, 2011 Global Moderator Posted September 10, 2011 Lots of people bowhunt black bear and they use the same bows they hunt whitetail with. They aren't really much thicker skinned than a deer, just more fur and fat. I think the hardest part is making an accurate shot because the fur can make it difficult to decide where to put the arrow. I've even got a video of a guy running across a field trying to catch up a brown bear and shooting it between the eyes with a arrow and dropping it like he'd shot it with a rifle, so a blackbear isn't a problem with a bow. fishingkidPA Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 both of those calibers will easily kill a black bear Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted September 12, 2011 Super User Posted September 12, 2011 If you really are bored and want excitement , invest in a good Bowie knife but take a lot of band-aids with you. Quote

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Alot of people do that with hogs. As far as using a bow you can and not have a problem. Just a little less room for error when making the shot. Quote

Now that sounds up my ally. Hand to hand combat with ol' Mr black bear. According how it panned out that could be the biggest adrenaline rush ever. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 17, 2011 Global Moderator Posted September 17, 2011 Lots of lodges do knife or spear hunts for feral hogs with dogs. I've looked into it and it sounds pretty intense! Quote
