bocabasser Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 is there a special paint? do i have to bake them? i just bought a mess ofthem off tw and they are unpainted. thanks in advance. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Tungsten has a much higher melting point than lead so you should be fine powder coating them. Baking powder coat cures it and makes it much more durable but is not a necessity. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 you could powder coat them. Dont powder coat if they have the plastic tube in them. But word of the wise. Make sure there is no powder that will clog the hole before you cure them. I spray paint mine. Quote

Make sure there is no powder that will clog the hole before you cure them. I spray paint mine. How durable is the spray paint? I've been using a spinnerbait (my avatar) with great results. Its a tungsten weight, but it didn't take long for the paint to start chipping off. Is there any special prep work you can do to get a more durable finish, or should I invest in powder paint? Sorry bocabasser, I'm not trying to hijack the thread, I'm assuming you would like this info as well. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Its not as near durable as powder paint. But its easier. I look to take the shine off them. I'm not really looking for the actual color. I've tried to powder coat weights, Its a big hassle to do it right. by dipping them. You have to plug both ends then suspend them somehow in the oven to cure them. Plus most of my tungstens have the plastic insert. If the paint starts coming off just shoot them again. I dont t rig all that much anymore but I paint all my weights black. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted September 7, 2011 Super User Posted September 7, 2011 I wonder if you could use some type of stain and dip them in over night and get results that way...hmmmm...I may have to experiment...LOL Quote
guitarkid Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I read in a magazine a while ago that you can hold a lighter or candle or something and turn tungsten black. -gk Quote
Super User webertime Posted September 8, 2011 Super User Posted September 8, 2011 I got a bunch of Charturuse tungsten weights and I sprayed them a nice flat black. A few THIN coats about 30 min between coats and you're done. Quote
BobP Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 I've tried powder coating tungsten worm weights, painting/clearcoating them, and just marking them up with a Sharpie pen. Powder coating is fine if you know how to do it. I don't and it was a real mess. Spray painting/clearcoating works OK if you have the right coatings, which most guys do not. A trip to the local Walmart won't find you durable clearcoat in my experience. Of the 3 methods, a Sharpie pen is the fastest and works pretty decently - not permanent but will last for a day of fishing. Reality? Next time buy painted tungsten weights with a factory baked-on finish (which you coulda done this time from BassPro!)! Quote
FL_Sharpshooter Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 If I'm in a hurry, I'll coat my bullet weights with nail polish and heat them up with a lighter to let them dry quicker. Obviously, powder painting is going to give you a much longer lasting coat of paint. As much as I lose weights though, it works for me. Quote
