Fishing History

Today is the first time i have herd this term. I was reading bass master magazine and it was under common bass fishing mistakes. And I'm the worlds worse about doing this. I was thinking about it last time I went out. I normally stay up on the river and never go to the main lake. Then last week I read a report about the hybrids was schooling outside this cove on the main lake side went over there had a blast. Got a lot of hybrids. And I even found a big main lake flat caught a lot of bass on it mainly spots one smallie. Got me to thinking about how many fish I'm missing out on by not trying new spots. Then I read the article it was like a sign that I got to start fishing new spots. But its hard not to go back to the places that I had luck in before especially when some one coming with won't them to have a good time and get some fish. Just wondering how everyone else does it. Magazine said spending part of outing fishing areas that you havnt before. I was think about next weekend and fish all weekend any never fish a place I have fished before.

It's more commonly referred to as fishing memories and we all tend to do this. The last time we were on the lake and found or caught bass is the first place we tend to start the next trip.

I like trying different places, even if I killed them yesterday good chance today I'm going to entirely new area.

Keep one thing in mind however, 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. If a particular structure is attractive to a species of fish, chances are it's going to hold true for a very long time; years even. Unless that structure changes.

I do quite a bit of deep, off-shore structure fishing for smallies. I have a handheld GPS with 37 waypoints on it. I have repeatedly used the "milk run" to keep my rod bent, year after year. Some do fail occasionally, but not often.

Do I try new spots? Yes, I make it a point to try one or two more spots every time out. That's why my waypoint log keeps growing!

The down side of fishing memories is doing the same thing you did without knowing why it worked. Seasonal periods come into play and the relationship of the bass and it's prey source.

The obvious is the spawning period, going back to empty beds isn't the best use of your time on the water. Fishing empty banks because the water temperature is too hot or fishing outside structure without any bass in the area becuase of current changes or no baitfish.

Just because you caught them last weekend doesn't mean they are still there and feeding. Take a few minutes to determine why you are catching bass, then the memories can be helpful.

I fish one 24 acre lake/pond (however you want to classify it) for the past 15 years and it seems to change in cover composition more and more. I may be able to catch fish on certain parts of the pond for a couple of years straight and then the next season the cover is either very sparse or nonexistent and the fish relocated.

Even tho the structure hasn't changed, I'm finding bass are relocating from one year to the next. For example, I fished this hump for 3 years straight, but for some reason the past 2 years it hasn't yielded much. So, I don't know, I guess I'm glad that I can jump into my truck and take a 6 mile trip have to learn the water body all over again year in and year out.
