MuffinMan Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Ive looked for a good article or thread on this. I have a few questions regarding jigging and braided line. 1) It is hard to feel a subtle strike using monofilament on my baitcaster so would braid be better for this application because I use that same rod and reel for crankbaits..? 2) Can I just tie the braided line directly on to my jig or crank or do I have to tie flouro to my braid and then to my jig or crank? 3) Does PowerPro float(above 50lb test)? This is why I use flourocarbon in clear water and braid in the thick stuff or muddy water. 2. Yes you can. I typically do not use a leader with my braid. I use a polymer knot. 3. Not sure but it probably will until it absorbs water. Quote
Super User deep Posted September 1, 2011 Super User Posted September 1, 2011 And if you're using braid, it pays to be a line-watcher; slack line sensitivity with braided line is not the greatest. I tend to fish plastics and jigs on at least a semi-slack line to achieve the vertical fall that I feel is necessary. Quote
Lake Forest Bassin Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 I only use braid when I'm pitching into really thick cover or in muddy water as stated above, braid doesn't cast that far I fish from the shore so I can use all the casting distance I can get. Quote

I have to disagree I cast just as far with my braided poles as I do with my others with floro or mono. If ur gonna use braid for jigs just becarefull around rocks I tie a rods length leader on of flouro to help with the rocks in the river I fish. Rocks and brad do not get along Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted September 2, 2011 Super User Posted September 2, 2011 . Rocks and brad do not get along Why?? What did I ever do to p.o. rocks? Quote
MuffinMan Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 Thanks for all the very helpful responses, I will be replacing my monofilament on that reel with 65lb POwerPro or Suffix 832 very soon. Quote
Gangley Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Ive looked for a good article or thread on this. I have a few questions regarding jigging and braided line. 1) It is hard to feel a subtle strike using monofilament on my baitcaster so would braid be better for this application because I use that same rod and reel for crankbaits..? You won't believe how much more feel you get from braid. All of my T-Rigs and Jigs are fished with braid. If its clear water, I add a flourocarbon leader to it. In my opinion, and some might argue, braid and flouro dont have enough give in the line to allow crankbaits and other treble hooked baits to stay buttoned up in a fishes mouth so I dont use braid or flouro when fishing those styles of baits. 2) Can I just tie the braided line directly on to my jig or crank or do I have to tie flouro to my braid and then to my jig or crank? Straight braid is fine, especially in areas with lots of vegetation. In clear open water areas I will usually tie on a flouro leader for peace of mind. 3) Does PowerPro float(above 50lb test)? In my experiance, all power pro floats until it gets heavily saturated, and even then it still has a good amount of bouyancy. It will not sink like flouro if thats what you are wanting to know. Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 2, 2011 Super User Posted September 2, 2011 Feeling a subtle strike depends on whose hands the rod is in period My wife could not tell a bite any better with a Berkeley Cherrywood than she could with a G-Loomis GLX, she would fair no better with braid than she would with monofilament but the reason is not sensitivity. What was transmitted up the line down the rod to the hands was lost by the brain. Now in my hands if that bass farts anywhere around my bait I'll know it! Quote
