Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 The thread about the wooden iPad got me to thinking. What's the strangest thing, you've ever had someone on the street, be it vendor or bum, try to sell you? Let's try and keep it clean. Mine was about two years ago. I had a guy come up to me trying to sell universal remotes. No kidding. The man was hawking universal tv remotes. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 Immortality. Was it a scam? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 Depends on your faith in the salesman, LOL. True story, though. Religious nut. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 I've been approached many times with the speakers in the back of the van routine. Quote
zero limit Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 A few years ago Had a guy walking by my house on his way to the pawn shop offer me some silver coins for $17.00 a piece (melt value )He told me his father recently died and his sister was taking everthing out of the house, he grabbed the coins before she could. So I bought 10 silver eagles and 7 morgan dollars got them all for $160 and a half a pack of cigarettes. Still have all the coins and that started me collecting Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 You have to be real careful buying any gold or silver, lots of fake out there, see it a lot in tourist areas like Mexican vendors. Especially gold jewelry and chains, doesn't make any difference if the karat content is marked or not( acid is the only way to know for sure). Most people selling coins or bullion will go to a reputable dealer, not a pawn shop, good chance those coins were not really his. I sold a few hundred silver dollars a few years back to a dealer, each coin was bought on it's numismatic value. If genuine you made a good deal. Quote

Super User slonezp Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 Soccer balls. Socks seem to be a big seller in Chicago. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 Seen socks before, belts, shoes, folex watches, religion, list goes on. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 There's a guy who peddles plastic lawn ornaments out of a brown van on the corner of Chicago and Kedzie. I have also had more than one guy want to trade me drugs to recharge their air conditioners. Quote

Super User BASSclary Posted September 1, 2011 Super User Posted September 1, 2011 I had some lady offer to buy me and my girlfriend alcohol after we got out of the movies. I'm guessing she just turned 21 and wanted to be "cool". I dont know if that classifies as her selling me anything though? 1 Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 1, 2011 Super User Posted September 1, 2011 There's a guy in my town that sells Daiwa reels labled as boat anchors. Quote
Red Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 There is a certain gas station I used to stop at on my way to work to get a can of dip. 530 am every time and always had some bum asking me for money or whatever. One time this guy came up to me and said "hey man you wanna buy some CD's? I know you love country music, I can tell. I got all the best country CD's right here" as he holds up a big case. I can't stand that crap, I don't go there anymore on my way to work. I had another guy in Walmart parking lot promise me a "new set of tires" from where he "works" if I gave him $15 for gas. Stasher1 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 With the price of freon now, I can understand why. No doubt. At $50 a pound, you have to sell drugs in order to be able to afford it. Quote

Shad_Master Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Several years ago while I was living in the Kansas City area, I was doing a project at the house that caused me to have to go to the hardware store several times throughout the day. Early in the morning I saw a guy setting up to sell sutffed animals out of his van while in a wheel chair. As the day went on, I saw lots of people stop and even thought about stopping myself to help out this poor guy sitting out in the sun on a hot day doing the best he could do. On my last trip to the hardware store, I was at the stop light and noticed he was packing up his leftover merchandise and was feeling bad that I hadn't stopped, when all of a sudden he stands up, folds up the wheelchair and drives away. guitarkid Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 I ran into a pimp selling his "merchandise" at a gas station in North Carolina one time. -gk Quote

Many years ago I worked as a custodian in a city bus terminal in Manchester, NH. We had a customer who rode the bus from Nashua, NH to Manchester (~20 miles) a few times a week. Every time I saw him he was listening to his portable CD player, buying snacks out of the vending machine, or walking to/from the music/comic store on the next block. One day I happened to be on the other side of town running some errands, and who do you suppose I saw standing at a busy intersection with a "Will work for food" sign? Since the intersection was nowhere near a grocery store, lots of people would just hand him cash while they were waiting for the light to change. This scumbag was making enough money to afford a weekly commuter pass, CD's, video games, over-priced snacks out of the vending machine, comic books, etc., just by standing at an intersection holding a sign.
