hey. what do you think of this combo?? im a new fisher, i already own a Quantum in 6.3:1 mounted on a 6'6" MH rod (dont know about the tip). so i am thinking about getting this combo in 7', Medium action, fast tip, and use it for crankbaits and spinnerbaits, and use my current setup for worms.

what do you think??

It seems like a decent starter combo but it appears that the reel is not very durable. I'm one of those guys who believe that while you can buy a good inexpensive spinning reel, you can not do that with a baitcaster.

Check your local Dick's Sporting Goods and see if they have any Shimano Citicas left for $50

From when I tested that rod and from what I heard it lacks sensitivity. Your crankbaits and spinnerbaits shouldn't have one setup. Spinnerbaits would be better off on your worm rod and the crankbait rod should have a softer tip.

Here is a combo that would work better for crankbaits and are in that price range. Although I haven't used it or heard much about it, it's got to be better than the tourney special.

BPS X Crank Combo

Is BPS your only shopping option? If not check out Cabelas Tournament ZS HS or the Daiwa Exceler or the Lews Speed Spool. The Tournament ZS is on sale and the Exceler can be found on ebay relatively inexpensive. You can also try ebay for the Quantum Accurist PT500/501 on ebay for around $45 or so. I have both the exceler and the accurist and the accurist is going on 4 yrs old and not one problem. Cabelas also has the Prodigy rod on sale as well and I use a 7' M/F prodigy as my spinning crankbait setup. I also have the 7' M/MF casting rod paired with the prodigy baitcast reel as one of my casting crankbait setups.

I would also recommend starting with a better reel. It will save you headaches and money in the long run. As far as the rod, I say if that is what you can afford, go for it. An inexpensive 7' MF rod will work fine for 1/4 to 3/8 oz spinnerbaits, and shallow to med cranks IMHO. It may not perfectly cover all those, but it will do until you get enough experience to know exactly what you want. Good luck.

It doesnt look like something worth buying, maybe try to get left over Citica from dicks or check out other combos, I saw one at dicks that had a Berkely Lightning rod and an Abu Garcia Silvermax reel, I was thinking of getting this one myself.

thanx a lot for the info!! i was about to get it, now i definitely wont...

bass pro is not my only option, but i dont have a local store either... i live in Mexico, so unless i want to pay twice as much, i have to purchase online in the US... i get a good discount at bass pro though, and i have some other things to get from there, so i would really prefer to get my rod and reel from there also....

Packard, thanx for the link... i had considered that combo also, but i have been using my quantum reel http://www.basspro.com/Quantum-Kevin-VanDam-Signature-Series-Baitcast-Reels/product/10210407/-1760445 for cranks and have been very happy with it.... however my rod is MH, so i want to get me a Medium rod Fast tip to put the quantum in and use for cranks, and another reel to put on my current rod for worms, and spinerbaits apparently.

Ok I understand as I have both Cabelas and BPS locally but have leaned towards Cabelas.

I've read the BPS cranking sticks are pretty decent rods for crankbaits.

Hey, some of my friends have this rod for crankbaits and really like it for the money. It won't be the most sensitive rod so you may miss bites but it will have the right action to keep the fish pinned.

Browning SilaFlex

They have a parabolic taper so it looks like a parabola when a fish is on. As for a reel there are a couple of options that will keep you in the $100 range.

This reel BPS Bionic Plus

This reel BPS Extreme

I don't know a lot about the bionic blade but it has decent reviews. I have used a the extreme and it's a good reel for the money, feels a lot like a Shimano Caenan to me.

thanx!! so, what do you think about using my quantum on that rod in 6'6" M for cranks, and getting one of those reels for my 6'6" MH rod and use it for worms??

Shop around in the flea market, and go to dicks sporting goods and see if they have any more Shimano Citica's left. Starting off with a cheap reel can make your baitcasting experience turn into a nightmare. A good reel can be had for around 50 dollars either in the flea market or on discount in stores. As for a rod a discounted crucial or Compre would deff. be an excellent starting point. I have owned both and can say they are a super bang for your buck. Good Luck! :D

thanx, but i live in Mexico, so there are no local stores, except one that charges twice as much as online stores... i already have what i believe is a decent reel, i dont know anything about the quality of the rod (jarvis walker, 6'6", MH)... but i am using this same setup for everything... i know thats not the best thing to do... thats why i am looking for a better rod for my reel and use that for crankbaits, and another reel for my current rod to use that for worms... right now im not fishing much with worms, since i havent caught one fish with them so far, so im throwing more crankbaits with good results.... but i would like to have a dedicated worm setup and use it more to learn how to fish with plastics....

If you want to use your quantum for cranks it will work fine just reel a little slower than you would for worms. I am not a fan of either of those reels but here is one that is on sale and I have used and like.

Abu Garcia Pro Max

The 6'6" M on the Browning Rod will be great for your use, that's the same length and power I use.

So the Browning SilaFlex 6'6" M with your Quantum Reel for cranking will be good.

Then your 6'6" MH with the Pro Max for worms will be good too.

thanx a lot for your response. i was looking at the Pro Max, and it looks good. what i dont like is the frame not being aluminium, but i guess all of the reels in that price range will be composite. im still debating over spending a little more to get an aluminium frame... maybe this one??

or for $10 more, the Quantum Code??

If you want an aluminum frame, consider the Quantum Antix. It is on Tackle Warehouse for $80 and has an all aluminum frame. It won't let me link it for some reason.

I haven't heard good things about the reels you linked. I have used an Antix and it's decent, it's like your quantum kvd signature series. If I was getting the Antix I'd get the 7.0:1 for worms.

You can also get the Lew's speed spool for $90 and is one of my favorite reels.

I have 3 of those reels and have never had a problem with any of them. It is possible to not spend a lot and still get a good product.

I have not seen Citicas for less then 99...They are awesome reels!!
