crankbait2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 last night i took a trip to my local BPS. i picked up two XPS Lazer Eye Nitro Extreme, The Egg (see link below). i picked up the Natural Brown Craw and the Brown Shad. (3/4oz) i just went out this morning and used them both, no luck. i have tried very slow - very fast retreive, nothing was working. although these baits have very good action. nothing was biting. anyone else use these or have any luck? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_51816_100005001_100000000_100005000_100-5-1 Quote
soccplayer07 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 they are very popular here on the Potomac River. They are great over the top of grass. Keep trying. You'll get it. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Never have but I have used a Manns -1, they are killer! Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 11, 2009 Super User Posted July 11, 2009 Baits, any bait for that matter, have a place and time my man, you not catching anything on the bait doesn 't mean the bait is bad, it simply means you didn 't use it in the right place at the right time. They ain 't magical ya know. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Author Posted July 11, 2009 before i answer Raul's response. the 3/4oz bait does look rather bulky/large. will Smallmouth bite this or is this more for Largemouth? the reason asking, the place i usually go fishing has a lot of rock bass as well as Small mouth. havent seen a large mouth at the end of my line, yet I actually have to disagree Raul. more times than none i will throw a Bomber Square A, 3/8oz crank out. to this day i have never been skunked. i tend to think there is a lot of hokus pokus magic in that lure. never lets me down , talk about a confidence bait since i never used "The Egg" prior to this morning............not so much confidence or magic Quote

Can you go to any lake or especially a strange body of water and catch like crazy on that lure? I think not. Quote
crw Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I use shallow running crank baits in 3-4 feet of water with a rocky bottom (deep running ones would get hung in the rocks) or over grass with a lot of luck. Quote

I wouldn't draw conclusions based on one outing. It's much more likely that you weren't using it in the vicinity of willing fish. I've used the Mann's Baby 1- and the Heddon Swim'n Image (this one goes down to 18") and they're both extremely effective lures. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Never have but I have used a Manns -1, they are killer! They look very much alike but i still like the Mann's better! Quote
crankbait2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 im going out again tomorrow morning. so ill see what happens. bassin finatic - i have never fished anywhere other than my normal fishing hole, which is a river off the ohio river. (rather small area). i have not tried my shallow cranks any where else to see if they have worked or not. so where i fish, it works for me! Quote
PondHunter Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 I havent used that lure, but the Rapala Shallow Shad Rap has worked really well for me. It doesnt have a rattle, but it still catches fish in muddy or stained water, and the design of the bill helps to keep it from getting hungup. Its bouyant enough to back up when you feel it contact cover and rise over it. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 12, 2009 Super User Posted July 12, 2009 The Bandit Footloose is another of those very shallow running baits. Quote

I was just re-enforcing what Raul said about time and place. Some lakes they will knock the snot out of a certain bait or color and other lakes they won't. Point is if you spend money on a bait you got to play with it a little to find out the where and when it works best. I wasn't trying to get on you.I would rather try to help you out anyway I can. It just drives me nuts how some people(namely my fishing partner) will buy all these "cool" lures then toss it 3-5 times and call it junk just because 5lbers aren't jumping in the boat after it : I guess thats what its like to have plenty of "disposable income" . DOVERANGLER Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 i use them all the time in delaware because the average lake depth is 2-5 feet! i get moderate luck with them i use the one that looks like the strike king color sexy shad, i believe it is called xxx shad. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 i understand theres a time and place. no worries. advice fully taken just got back from fishing. i am so convinced that the bomber square a lures have some type of lucky potion on them ;D. i was throwing the 0-1ft crank that i have been referring to and i didnt get a thing. couple hours worth of throwing and nothing. so i decided to throw my famous bomber out, and wahlah, i caught a Largemouth and a really nice sized White Bass. the white bass was the heaviest i caught to date and it was fighting. didnt have a scale but it had to be close to a 5 pounder. all in all, i was out for about 3.5 hours, 2 fish but had fun!! Quote
rondef Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 I have three of these baits and I have caught a lot of bass with them. My biggest so far was a 4lb 8oz on a black and silver one. I cast them out and just use a steady retrieve. I found that they work best for me early morning or late at night. I have caught bass mid day with them when I cast them into shady areas and slow down my retrieve. I caught a 2lb 13oz bass on one yesterday while fishing the Potomac River, I was using the crawfish pattern one. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 If you are looking for another suggestion, I caught my PB on a Norman Fat Boy, bluegill pattern. http://www.***.com/descpageHDCNORMAN-NFBC.html 8-) Quote
crankbait2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 i am seeing the term PB bass quite often. i cannot figure out what the PB stands for. :-/ :-[ Quote

That white bass would be the new Ohio state record!!! That would be a fun day, you catch your first largemouth ever AND the state record white bass. Quote
tyrius. Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 anyone else use these or have any luck? I haven't used those specific ones, but I have good success with the Mann's and Rapala shallow divers over weedbeds. After reading your other posts, it's likely that the spot you're fishing isn't conducive to a wake bait. If you're only ever going to fish one spot then you'll be best served by buying lures that make sense for that spot. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 if only i had a scale to weigh these fish.................... : anyways, i would love to fish other areas but i will continue to go back to my favorite hole till i no longer catch anything. but as for now.....................i will enjoy it for as long as it lasts!!! Quote
DEbassman17 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I've never had any luck on the big "egg". Get the 2 inch in either purple tiger or xxx shad. Reel it in real fast with plenty of jerks and twitches in between. It is my absolute favorite lure for all 4 seasons. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 taken from Uncle Leo.... Never have but I have used a Manns -1, they are killer! agreed. personally, i love the baby 1-minus. produced lots of fish for me. Quote
tyrius. Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 if only i had a scale to weigh these fish.................... : At least be reasonable in your guesses. Maybe just measure the length. That way you won't look ridiculous in claiming to have caught the state record. Quote
