madbass Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Last week I was on vacation (fishing). I was doing quite a bit of wacky rigging with the Gamy finesse weedless wide gap hooks. I lost more fish than usual and I am wondering if it is because of the hook or the fact that it has the weed guard on it. The fish that I did get into the boat were mostly hooked (barely) in the roof of the mouth, not the corner. What is the recommended hook set with this type of hook? Any ideas or pointers on this? Diggy Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I been using regular 3/0 and 4/0 EWG hooks with this setup (using o ring) and have been landing them with no incident. I am not expert I caught one in this manner yesterday and the hook was set well. I had to mash the barb to get it out. Quote

Were you using the 2/0 or smaller? That hook by design will cause missed fish due to the hook eye being so close to the hook point and bend. The flimzy plastic weed guard won't affect hookups. If you insist on that hook, use a larger size, minumum 4/0. I did extensive testing with that model when it first came out--all the ones I had were included in a trash pickup. That is why I make my own weedless hooks using Octopus hooks. Quote

I did not have a good hookup % with them, never could figure it out but I think it has to do with the shape, the finesse hooks are straight inline, the mosquito hook is slightly offset. Quote

The Mosquito is a super hook, as is the Owner Wacky. That said, I've had no issue with the Gamakatsu. I use it in small sizes with great results, both dropshot nose hooking and wacky rig. I fish small plastics on the size 2 and 4 quite frequently and have no problems with hookups or losing fish. Most often, they're in the upper lip or corner. Quote

Super User deep Posted August 30, 2011 Super User Posted August 30, 2011 For plain old wacky rigging, I use the Gammy finesse wide gaps (NOT the weedless ones - I hate them). You set the hook just by starting to reel in. It helps a lot if you don't horse the fish, and use a slower (fast action) rod. For weedless wacky (basically a Texas rig in the middle of the worm), I like regular EWG hooks. The hookset is a regular cross their eyes T-rig hookset. An extra-fast rod is what I use. P.S. Fishing regular wacky rigs on an ultralight with a 3" or 4" senko is a hoot! Try it sometime. Quote

No way would I use a Kahle hook for bass fishing, that has a worse hookup ratio than the finesse wide gap. That hook is best used for trotline catfishing. Quote
