Super User clayton86 Posted August 27, 2011 Super User Posted August 27, 2011 Here in wny the county I mostly hunt is shotgun only for deer. Those of u who are shotgunners what slugs do use and out of what gun. Last year I used hornady sst out of my 870 20ga I'm gonna use the same this year if I can find them they were sparse last year and iv only got 5 left which I'll burn up befor the season starts just confirming zero and blowing up pumpkins lol. Sfritr Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I have a winchester 1300 12ga. Unfortunately, it only likes winchester ammo. I have been using Winchester Platinum Tips for about six years and have yet to have a deer go more than 30 yds. I am getting 2 in groups at 100yds and have taken deer out to 150 using these slugs. The only issue is that my 1300 is synthetic and is fairly light. It definately beats you up on recoil more than any other gun I have fired and that includes 300 win mags, 45/70s and so on. Quote
fishingkidPA Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 i just use the good old remington sluggers. i had a rifled barrel, but i couldnt find ammo it liked. i was hitting a 1 foot grouping at 50 yard . i tried a lot of rounds including hornady and some like copper hollow point remington slugs. But now i just use my mossberg sluggster. its a smooth bore with buck horn sights, and it will get the job done to 75. shot a deer running last year and dropped it in its tracks. it doesnt really get the call that much cause i use my .270 alot. but remington sluggers get the job done. Super User clayton86 Posted August 29, 2011 Author Super User Posted August 29, 2011 my 870 prefers the hornadys or federal sabots in 3in mag. Its a tiny gun as well not synthetic but its got a smaller stock on it from when I got it as a kid and was smaller framed. The hornadys definitly are bruisers the first one I squezed off I was like holy beep I droped 2 deer with it last year never went more the 30 yds as well. Years befor with the federals I never had one take a step after pulling the trigger iv killed about 30 deer with it over the last 8 years and never had to track a single one. Maybe its the gun maybe its me idk but I don't see the need for the 12ga "punch" when my 20ga is flater shooting making it more accurate and still knocks em dead. Quote
Senkoman12 Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 remington sluggers out of an 870 rifle sight smoothbore. i was shooting 4" groups at 50yds and for a smoothbore thats pretty fricken good Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted September 4, 2011 Author Super User Posted September 4, 2011 I wish I could find a smooth bore for my 20ga all I can find is rifled I think I can get a smooth/cantilever for my 1100 but I love my 870 to much I just make sure I don't miss at 3 bucks a trigger squeeze Quote
River Rat316 Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Whats the reason for not liking the rifled? I am looking to upgrade my 1100 to rifled from smooth bore slug Quote
