Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 28, 2011 Super User Posted August 28, 2011 When we first thought Irene would hit Florida, we prepared as we remembered what we went thru with Wilma, very glad it did not pan out and Florida was skipped over. Getting ready was not difficult and any expense occurred were on items we will use anyway. The Government agencies are only covering their ***, I appreciate it and keep it coming. My concern is to keep my family as safe as possible, if others are cavalier, so be it. Simple remedy to media coverage is just change the station. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I am in Montreal, Canada and this is a crazy storm. We get storms in winter with 3 ft of snow and its easy. No stress or problems we just go outside, shovel it out and go to work or school. Irene has hit hard. No electricity all day, crazy wind, ridiculous amount of rain, trees and debrie everywhere. Its rare for us to get hit this hard from a southern storm. Quote
Super User webertime Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 I'm sitting here sipping coffee looking out my back door. Sunny, light breeze a few Hummingbirds checking out what's left of the garden. My daughter is building a Lego House or a Hat I can't tell. Lost power for 4 hours last night. I walked around the neighborhood this morning and saw one broken shutter. Our area was pretty fortunate... one friend lost their home and many many more are cut off from town. Vermont for the most part is pretty banged up with record/near record flooding. The entire state is basically closed. Quote

We lost power here in my area for 29 hours. Still allot of places out around here. I played hide and seek with my seek yesterday while power was out. He did very well in the dark as well, he usually scare but we played with the lantern and flash lights. My mother came close to not losing her mobile home. Her tree fell on top of house but very little damage. The bigger portion of tree some how missed. It snap in sections. It freak her out though she was in her room where the tree hit. So far around my area I don't see any damage just no power still in most areas in allot of down trees. My wife's cousin did lose their kitchen. We was told by her family a tree went through the kitchen but that's the only damage we know for now. They said insurance is post to cover it. midnighthrasher- Glad to hear your safe as well and thanks for your report as well! No damage done on your home or area is there? Quote
Super User webertime Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 They are insured so they'll be fine. We are fine as far as a threat of flooding. Floods in VT are very fast and brutal since we are so steep and it's basically granite with clay/hardscrabble (combo of clay and granite chips) nothing really soaks in and it all rushes off the mountains/hills and settles in the valleys and eventually flow into Champlain or to the Connecticut River. We got power back around midnight, again up where I am near the lake we got off with very very minimal damage. Get up into the mountains and down south and it got really really bad. Good to hear your mom is ok. My dad called (ironically he's a FEMA coordinator in the Virgin Islands) and made fun of us... When we hung up, then the power died and the wind took off... He jinxed us! http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/ If you can check out some of the photos/videos the river in Bristol and Lincoln you see highlighted is usually 15' wide and gin clear. I live just north of those towns and just west of Huntington. PS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpRErzxj0Uo&feature=player_embedded Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 I hope no one argues against the much needed infrastructure rebuilding. 2 Quote
GrundleLove Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Is the joke that the real lyrics to the song are "Come on Eileen" but everyone says "Irene"? Or do people not know the real lyrics to this song buy Dexy's Midnight Runners....or is Goodnight Irene referring to the folk band from the 30's.... Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 Is "Goodnight Miss Kalabash where ever you are" any better ? Quote
preach4bass Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 Electricity was just restored to my community this evening. We got hit hard. Huge trees down in just about every yard, light lines and transformers down in all the roads, most roads were blocked by big trees immediately after the storm, other roads blocked by flooding, several houses had trees demolish them, most houses had at least some minor damage (like our leaky roof). But, all in all, we are very blessed! Not a single fatality in our county (as far as we know right now)! Thanks for your prayers. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 31, 2011 Super User Posted August 31, 2011 I do not know how insurance policies are written up north but in hurricane prone areas the normal deductible does not apply. If damage is done due to a "named storm", doesn't have to be a hurricane, the deductible is 2% of the insured value of the building( not the real estate market value). The deductible amount may vary with different insurers but 2% is common. Quote
