Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 28, 2011 Super User Posted August 28, 2011 Snook, that's great. Maybe I can meet you down there Monday morning. The season opens in a few days so you better catch what you can now. You know the snook shut down just as soon as the season opens. Quote
SoFl-native Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Yeah i had a fun day too. Ran to the flats and caught four in the AM then that bite died completely. Better fish came in the canals. Started pitching and getting good bites. Caught between 15 and 20. A couple 3's, a 4.5 and a 6.5. Credit to Robert for the boat side pic of the 6.5. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 28, 2011 Super User Posted August 28, 2011 Boy, I picked the wrong weekend to be at work. Looks like a bunch of big fish got caught. Great pics, Dale. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 WOW!. You absolutley slayed'em in this heat. Way to go. Quote

The season opens in a few days so you better catch what you can now. You know the snook shut down just as soon as the season opens. The slots shut down for sure, lol I'll probably stop by an ICW spot before I get to the inlet at around 4 am , fish the south jettie for an hour on the incoming see if maybe any tarpon are around, they love the fast current. Then I'll hit the beach, probably on the north side, good snook hole there. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 Ok. Unless I fall asllep, I'll be on the beach, north side, at 5am. My hat will be on backward so you'll be able to fnd me. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 I'm leaving in the next 30 minutes I want the last of the outgoing tide. Hope the water isn't too low on the north side, if so the south beach has plenty of water with a good drop off, not as many snook but they can be bigger there. I'll find you. Quote
SoFl-native Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 The ol sarcasm meter pegged off the scale. I had a monster day today at Lox. I was off the water by 10:00 with at least a 23lb bag. Only caught about a dozen, but size was very good. Two 3s, a 4, a 5 and an 8. The big one measured 8 on the boga, which I think is conservative. She was 24.5" long with a really fat 17" girth. I really hit a nice bite today. If I'd a had a decent stick with me today, I think 30lbs was a definate possibility. I only fished ~3 hours and spent a lot of that time trying to get my five year old hooked up on a pig. There is plenty of fish to be caught at Lox, if you put the effort. My last four trips have had at least one 5lber in the boat, including the two biggest fish I've touched this year (the other being, Jack's monster bass two weeks ago). From what I saw, Robert and Dale tore em up out there today also. Nice fish! Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 29, 2011 Super User Posted August 29, 2011 Nive fish Dale. Robert does take good pictures. Quote
Bass Angler To The Max Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Youre not alone. I live in parkland, about 20 minutes away from lox. Fishing everywhere from local canals to holiday park to lox, the bass are playin hide and seek. The surface temp of the water is just to hot. They dig down deep in the burrows in search for more cooler water. Fish outside edges or anywhere wheres theres running water. Be sure to use something that will get down deep where ever you are. Rapala deep divers are key for this time of year. Always the same story in South Florida - when it gets scorching temp's, fishing is dead. Just fish the ground with anything you've got. In about 45-60 days fishing should gradually pick up as the temp outside should lower. Best of luck and tight lines. PS… im always asking for spots to fish in Lox or holiday park. Anybody can suggest some new spots? Thanks. Quote

It is usually good up there although I have not fished there in a couple of months. The fishing out west on the alley is usually good too. Also try the fingers along US 27 north of the bend in the road. At the fingers, fish the drop offs where the canals intersect. As far as Lox, try the deep water around the spillway levees and also run west past the bend and fish the hydrilla salad bowl. The bass try to keep cool under the weeds. Fish early morning at first light for the best bite.Just my .02. good luck. I live in Coral Springs BTW.. Quote
salmicropterus Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Glades, those are spots I usually have some success at too but it has been rough out of Holiday. The earlier reports about Holeylands are good and a bunch of us have had some success at Lox. But even at Lox it's like a bite per 75-100 casts. I really don't think it's water temps but more the higher and moving water (except at Lox).Water temps down here and at the Lake are in the mid-80s and most of us have seen much higher than that this time of year. There is a tricky time every year where it seems when the fish scatter from their usual locations to either the flats or in deep holes. It's just tougher and you have to adjust expectations and use it as a learning process. Quote
piscicidal Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I went to Lox this morning for a couple hours before work (8:30- 11:00). The bite was not as good as Saturday, for me. There was zero wind and the fish were more skittish. I was able to scrape up a half dozen fish, though, including a 5 and a 3. I lost a really nice fish just as I was leaving...big ol horse that dug down into the weeds and got away. He was well over 5lb. Fishing is tough, but I've been lucky enough to stay on these fish for a couple weeks now. Today was my fifth straight trip at Lox with at least one +5lb. Dave hit on a very important tip...watch the water temp and adjust your fishing. You're not going to catch much throwing a fast moving bait in 88 degree water on the flats. Quote
Diggy Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Every time I plan to go there someone tells me they didnt catch much. I caught 8 in my dads lake the other day...Ill stick to fishing there, the fish attack bait like they are under famine. I see a few spots off of southern and in wellington that look great. I tried one for about an hour and caught 1 bass and got hammered by a gar Quote

Hey Sal, I haven't been fishing much this year(health, family, work) so I was giving general suggestions to the OP. I apologize to the OP if my suggestions are not current to the conditions. I agree with you about Lox, you have to wear out your arm casting, but if you have patience and adjust to the conditions of the day, you will usually get a decent bass or three. The water temps have been cooler because of the clouds and rain. It definitely helps keep the bugs down too. This time of year I fish slowly and deep, looking for current ledges or some structure, or look for holes in the deeper water hydrilla, or deeper water adjacent to hydrilla. I know a couple areas like that at Lox. Not very sophisticated, but it seems to work for me. Have you tried the eeliminator out at Lox? I ordered some from TW for the suitcases. Quote

Man, don't apologize to anyone. We are all trying to figure it out and those are usually very good spots so I'm sure, least of all me, anybody's gonna critique any constructive thoughts. I'm the goof at Lox-just haven't put the time in up there. Banged these canals down here and then when the Lake got hot spent all my time up there so Lox got passed by in my learning curve. We went up there on Saturday and caught some good ones but I have no confidence "I'm on fish". Going to Cali for 6 days starting tomorrow so need to get up there a day or two before my T at Lox on the 10th. (and spend more time there in the future) And...gotta get some of those snakes and eeliminators Quote
FL Gator Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks guys for all the posts. I actually have been extremely busy with my wife expecting our second one, which is a boy this time! I actually got to go out behind my house in the lake on Saturday for about an hour. All I used were red shad culprits and second cast boom. caught a 3 pounder. not that big but decent. About 15 minutes later I caught a 4.5 pounder. Nice size bass. It was a great day after that. If I would have stayed out longer I probably would have kept roping them. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon, but at least I found a good spot. It sure was hot out that day. Quote
FL Gator Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 Capt. Shane is right. If you wait for the report you missed the bite. I would rather not get anything and then have a good day every once in a while. There is always some good and some bad especially in the summer down here because of the heat and the water levels.
