sightju Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I am trying to decide what rod and reels to purchase with a $700.00 budget. I need to get a finesse/drop shot set up and a cranking setup. I would like to invest more in the rods than the reels and have some money left over for adding some additional tackle since I have just got back into fishing. I have been looking through the other threads but I am looking for some advice based on my budget. There just isn't enough choices out there! Quote
Packard Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Here is my recommendation. Finesse/Drop Shot: Rod-Shimano Cumara 7'2" Medium XF Spinning Rod ($219) Reel-Shimano Stradic CI4 2500F ($200) Cranking: Rod-St Croix Avid 7' Medium-Heavy M Casting Rod ($180) Reel-Shimano Citica ($30-$100, they are closing out for a good deal right now.) This should cost you around $650 so you can spend $50 on tackle. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted August 24, 2011 Super User Posted August 24, 2011 For the cranking setup, Id go with a Calcutta 200b they're 199 and a Powell Endurance med/hvy extra fast 7'2" they're 169. Total 370 before tax. That leaves 330 for dropshot/finesse and baits. Can't advise on the ds/finesse seeing as how I've never really tried them. Quote

dude loves to fish Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 For cranking - Kistler Micro Magnesium Crank Rattle n roll teamed up with a REVO STX or check out the new z bones. For Drop Shot - Kistler Magnesium Finesse Special teamed up with a Revo Premier. Quote
Canga Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 for the cranking setup, i would get a BPS crankin stick paired with one of the many curado E5's that are on clearance. should cost around 170-180 total (not including line) for drop shot, st croix avid 6'8" MXF or 6'9" MLXF paired with a 9530 Pflueger Patriarch (or save 50 bucks, add an ounce and get a 9230 Pflueger Supreme XT) (about 380 with a patriarch, 330 with a supreme xt) for a total of 500 - 550, depending on reel, leaving a nice chunk for some tackle and line! I just bought me this setup the Curado 200E5 and the Crucial 7'M-MF crankbait rod. I love the 5.0:1 ration the reel has. I took it out last Sunday tossing my *** Big Bomb Short-Fused (roundbill) on it. I only landed 1 bass though. Quote
sightju Posted August 26, 2011 Author Posted August 26, 2011 Thought I would add the selection of rod and reels that I currently own. I purchased these without doing much research but what ideas do you guys have for what purposes I should be using these rods for. St. Croix Premier 6'6" spinning rod Med power fast action with a Johnny Morris JM40H spinning reel BPS Extreme 7' casting rod Med Hvy power fast action with a Shimano Curado 200E7 BPS Extreme 6'6" casting rod Med power fast action with a BPS Extreme ETX10HE reel Also, what types of line do you use for different setups. I currently have some Berkley Trilene Mono in different tests, and some braid that my brother gave me. Not sure what brand. Quote

I use that for my t-rigs and jigs 3. I would use that for spinnerbaits For my t-rigs and jigs, I use Seaguar InvisX Fluorocarbon in 10lb test, love it. For my wacky rig and dropshot, I have one spool of fireline braid for wacky rigs and a spool of trilene xt for my dropshot. For my crankbaits, I use Yo-Zuri Hybrid, I love it too. Quote
