Fish Chris Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Some of you might know that I put a pretty powerful, (but quite musical) stereo system in my truck, shortly after I bought it new, 3 years ago. Well, that setup worked really well, and it got a lot of comps, but 1) I was getting a little bored with it, and 2) I had finally managed to crack the spiders on my 12" subs. They still played, but popped and clicked a little on certain notes. Sure, I could have had them repaired..... But instead, I built an all new enclosure, for two 15"s Now, these are not known to be the "loudest" 15" subs around..... But they are known to be some of the tightest, cleanest, most musical subs available. The way I see it, with two 15"s getting close to 1000 wts RMS, in the cab of any vehicle, getting loud enough is kind of a given.... for my musical tastes anyway. {note: IMPO, super loud fart-boxes, that can be heard from 6 blocks away, are really easy to build, but are pretty much kid stuff. Kind of the 1A of speaker box building} But to each their own. Another kind of fun thing I'm going to be doing in the next week, is to build three port extenders, which will allow me to drop my tuning down to about 25hz at will, in about 1 minute. (It's about 35hz right now) That should really pump up the ultra-deep bass that you feel, more than you hear I will also be adding two more 8" mid-bass drivers, and another pair of component mids and highs, in custom pods in the dash. Only about $250 for all of that. Easy / cheap stuff, compared to the sub box build, which was about $600. Anyway, their are LOTS of louder stereos around these parts than mine (SPL setups) and somewhere around Nor Cal, I know their are some way cleaner pro-sound quality (SQ) setups than mine..... But I have to say, this is a fairly loud, and pretty darn clear / musical stereo setup Fantastic for long fishing / road trips I have about 800 MP3 files on a little flash drive in my glove box, all super easily accessible straight through my deck, by way of my remote control (why wear out the buttons... or lean forward when you don't have to Cardboard mock-up last week... The real deal... Put it in yesterday Going on a long road / photography trip tomorrow, to relax, and enjoy it Peace, Fish PS, Inevitably, somebody will think anything more than the stock scratch box, that comes in a vehicle, is totally stupid, and nothing but a waste of time and money. "Why" ? those people ask, "Would anybody do this" ? I'd have to answer that question, with a question..... "Why would anyone put an 8000 hp motor in a car, and drive it down a 1/4 mile track, at more than 300 mph, only to have to completely rebuild it, after every 1 to 3 runs ??? Because its crazy, totally excessive, and just plain fun I like racing too 1 Quote
senko_77 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Beautiful stuff, Fish! As much as I enjoy keeping up with all the things you post (fish/wildlife pics, car stuff, etc.), what I really enjoy is your perspective on life in general. Your one of those people that seems to truly know how to live and thats a frame of mind that TONS of people try their whole lives to obtain. A master in the art of living. Keep it up, dude. Glad to see you got that truck bumpin Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Very nice I love building custom enclosures and interiors but like u said feel the bass not hear it that's what its all about u should feel not hear the thump. My buddy back in high school had a old dodge wagon that his 153db with 1 solo x 15 and 4 solobarics 10s Quote

IMHO I could care less what you do with your money, but I just have to wonder why you need to announce your arrival minutes before you get there with the playing of ear shattering pollution. I also have to wonder what your thoughts would be if someone else did the same thing next to where you were fishing for "Mrs. Big". I guess I will go to my grave trying to figure out why some people feel they have the right to disturb other people's lives with their choices of music, boating skills, etc., etc.. 2 Quote
hookingem Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 All your stuff is always done the right way, and always looks clean. Good job Chris Quote
GrundleLove Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I honestly thought after reading your topic that this thread was going in a different direction... Quote
Fish Chris Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 Thank you guys I also have to wonder what your thoughts would be if someone else did the same thing next to where you were fishing for "Mrs. Big". On rare occasion (I typically avoid fishing on days where the lake is crowded with joy boaters / water skiers) I will see / hear ski boats with some really loud, nice stereo systems. The boat wakes and all the screaming an hollering bugs the heck out of me, but if it's a nice sounding stereo system, it kind of calms my nerves, while I'm thinking.... "Well, at least it sounds good" Same thing when I'm laying in bed at night, and here some really deep bass roll by the house (very common in my area... probably 4 to 10 X's a night)..... and I'll be thinking, "Man, that sounded really powerful / good.... but I bet they don't have the mids/highs to keep up with mine" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyway yea', it just sounds really full, and musical. Great for long road trips, like I'm getting ready to do right now Peace, Fish Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Huh, What? I can't hear you. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 The loud systems usually do not bother me, only in two cases. One, the bass is so jacked that it causes the car to rattle. If you are going to put money into a car do it right. Two, the people in the car go into a store but leave the stereo turned up. If you are not in the car what is the point of letting it play? I have done a little upgrades to my car, nothing major since its just for my enjoyment not any shows. Did not want to go for something loud and thumping which made the music sound horrible. Upgraded to a Pioneer Avic head unit, component speakers in the front, coax in the rear doors, 12in sub in the back, with separate amps for the speakers/sub, and a capacitor on the sub. For my little Scion xB RS7 it does its job just fine. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Nice setup! Back in the day, for me anyway (1992-98), sealed boxes although inefficient (BIG AMP) gave the "truest" sound, or have the newer generation speakers done away with that? Ported boxes usually gave the "best" low frequency response at a specific frequency, but lacked the tight thump at different frequencies and resonated a bit more than sealed at frequencies other than the optimum tuned frequencies. Basically, is ported the way to go for the true sound now? Was thinking of building a custom box for the Pathfinder, but haven't been into speaker design for a while now. I am all over the place for music choices, you name it I play it. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Chris I need to show this to my buddys. They all say by the time I am 30 I will out grow systems. I just turned 26 last month and I don't see that happening any time soon. They also say I will out grow sports cars. What do they know? Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Good Lord....that's nuts. I like it. Quote
preach4bass Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I don't know anything about car speakers, but I like the camo bedspread! Quote
detroit1 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I'm with you , LUND. Noise pollution sux. Please use your systems in a responsible way. Not picking on you fish, but the first thing i think of when i hear music too loud for the area or time of day is: i hope you blow your eardrums out and your vehicle burns to the ground. I don't even care if it's a song that i like. I'm tired of the "look-at-me" crowd in any form. (loud music, tats, videos, etc.) Tread lightly and carry a big stick.....geez, i sound like my dad.. Quote
Fish Chris Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 Thanks again guys South FLA, I think sealed is still the way to go for the absolute truest sound..... but then, an enclosure which has been ported correctly, with "the right sub woofer" (I'm totally sold on these Dayton HO's) can be amazingly tight, and clean. In fact, I'm just waiting for somebody to say they don't like anything bigger than 10"s or 12"s, because 15"s are not fast / tight enough.... > Oh yea', ? Come check this out I even have a few songs picked out for that occasion. Hey Tip, I can't imagine outgrowing my love for music. A really nice sound system is just the means to make great music, sound even better Why would a person out grow that ? About the only way I have changed in the last 30 years, is that now I want my system to be really clean, and balanced, and absolute loudness is not such a high priority. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Oh, so BTW, I spent about 10 hours in my truck today, about 5 hours of it driving, the other 5 parked, pretty much listening to my new setup the whole time. I really cranked it up while driving on the freeway. But while parked at Golden Gate Bridge park (lots of tourists around) I kept it really low most of the time. A couple times for periods of about 30 seconds, I cranked it up, to hear a certain passage, or something cool I hadn't heard on the new system yet > but I was thinking about "anything but" showing it off ! On the contrary, if I could have snapped my fingers, and made all those people disapear, I'd have been much happier.... and able to crank my system with no goof balls staring at me LOL Peace, Fish Quote
MuffinMan Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 looks nice man!bet it sounds even better! Quote
detroit1 Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I'd like to listen for a little while... Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 so....exactly what kind of music/genre(s) are you playing? Quote
Fish Chris Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 Well, I listen to pretty much everything, as far as genres go > Which is why I wanted a system which can play all frequencies well, and balanced. Lately though, I have been listening to a lot of Dubstep (which IMPO is just techno / electronic of the 2010's) A lot of these recording are just awesome, lots of sub, mids, highs, great seperation, interesting beats, etc. Peace, Fish so....exactly what kind of music/genre(s) are you playing? Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 4, 2011 Super User Posted November 4, 2011 In 1977 I moved into a new place so I decided to build a stereo system, bought top of the line components and did the assembly, I then built form scratch 5' towers, each with 6 speakers and hooked up all the crossovers. A labor of love, I could have bought a system equal to or better for less money, but it was something to do, it was awesome. About the same time I bought a 77 grand prix( loved that car) and put as good a system as was available then...............2 years later, sold the car and outgrew the noise, now it's only talk radio..........lol.
