Lip Ripper 87 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I am looking to upgrade from my one of my casting rods and not exactly sure what my best option is. I want a rod that will be able to throw weightless senkos, shaky heads, up to 1/2 oz jigs and Texas rigs. I know that's a lot to ask for. Sensitivity to feel light bites is my main focus.I was looking at the G Loomis GL2 worm and jig 7'1 MH (853CJWR). Will be paired up with a Diawa Viento. I own a GL2 flip/punch and love it. Detailed insight or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 22, 2011 Super User Posted August 22, 2011 Whats your price range? Quote
KSRonH Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Since you're looking at Gloomis I would suggest the MBR843. The sensitivity will be better than the GL2 rod. If thats over your price range you might consider a used MBR. You should be able to find a used MBR less than the price of a new GL2. Quote
KSRonH Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I was suggesting the IMX series. They retail at $270 I believe. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 At the $200 price point you can do better than the GL2. St Croix Avid for one. Quote
Fat-G Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 You have a lot of great options in the $200 range. Take a look at the Cumara rods, either the CUC-72MH or CUC-X72MH. I have the 7'2 MH/F, and while it's a superb rod for 1/8-3/16 oz. t-rigs, a 1/2 oz. jig is right at the top end of the rod. But, it throws the lighter weights extremely well. It would be a sweet 1/4 oz. shakey head rod. The CUC-X72MH on the other hand, has a really good action for throwing 1/2 oz. jigs, but won't dip down into the 3/16 oz. range very well. I think the power difference between the two models is a pretty large gap. Cumara's are great rods and well worth the money. Very sensitive. Also take a look at the Dobyns Champion rods, specifically the 704/734. I have a Savvy 734 and a Champion 735, and I can honestly say right now the 4 power Dobyns rods are the most versitile rods I have ever fished with. It will handle your worm fishing and jigs very well. I would suggest getting the 734/Full Hand model. It balances better than the split-grips and you'll learn to like the extra length. I like my Dobyns rods way more than my Cumara's, and that says a lot. Both are amazing fishing tools. Edit: FWIW, my Champion 735, which is a pitching and flipping rod, is more sensitive than my Cumara, which is a finesse rod, by a good ways. Quote
dude loves to fish Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I own a Kistler Magnesium jig rod and a Helium LTA that I use for what you are asking and they both are great rods. And if it's sensitivity you are looking for, these rods are very sensitive. I just got a micro guide magnesium in the other day and after fishing with this rod I think I will be going all micro guides from now on. I think it made the rods just that more sensitive and now maybe I want be tangling all my rods up now. Quote
KSRonH Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 DVT offers another good suggestion. I have 3 Gloomis rods and 3 St Croix rods. I prefer Gloomis for sensitivity and St Croix for moving baits. It's hard to beat St Croix's Avid line for value. You can't go wrong either way and I think you'd be happier with either option over the GL2. Quote
Lip Ripper 87 Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 Thanks for all your input. Price range is up to $250 maybe $300 area. I just started dipping into more of these higher quality rods, didn't know what i was missing out on. Would hate to trial and error it because its alot of $$. Anyone else?? Quote
boystcroix Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Check out the St.Croix LTB70MF. They are very sensitive for bottom fishing and cast weightless senkos a mile. They are rated for up to 5/8 oz. but I've thrown over 3/4 oz. with my extreme and never thought I was over doing it on that action. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Be patient. You might be able to buy a GLX MBR844C or BCR845 for $250-$275. I have bought several rods offered on our our Flea Market. If you want a great rod at a better price, G.Loomis IMX MBR844C $125-$150. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Another vote for Cumara. 6'8 MH xfast. Amazing rod Quote

About the only thing I don't do with it is flip, frog, and deep crank. It's hauled many 4 and 5 lb bass out of the weeds here. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Also a fan of the LTB70MF. Be careful what you're getting yourself into with these higher level rods. They're addicting. Quote

Lip Ripper 87 Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 Ended up ordering a Dobyns 703 for my application. From what i hear i will be more than happy with it. Thanks for all your input! Quote
