Big Stick Joe Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Hey guys, So gander mountain has a sale on a Shimano Clarus 7ft med/fast action med power rod for 25% off. I was curious on what lures/technique would you use a med/fast act med pwr rod. Thanks Quote
BuckyKat Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 After reading a post of RoadWarriors that can be found in "the best of BR" I took his advice on using a 7' M/F spinning for senkos and similar plastics. I wanted a Compre but the local shop only had a Clarus at the time so I took it (with the $10.00 rebate) and I love it. Whether you go spinning or baitcaster, my opinion is that it's a great rod, at 25% off I think it's a fantastic rod! The only thing that I'm not happy with is that this years Shimano line has gone away from cork . Glad I did get a Compre before that happened. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 22, 2011 Super User Posted August 22, 2011 Crank baits. A good multi-purpose rod for treble hooked baits. Not so good IMO for single hook lures. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted August 22, 2011 Super User Posted August 22, 2011 That's the Clarus Crankbait. It wouldn't be my first choice for plastics of any sort, let alone weightless worms and flukes. Quote
Packard Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 that action makes a great fluke, tube, and weightless worm rod. Shimano Med-Fast is more like a moderate. So this would be a crankbait rod. Quote
Big Stick Joe Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 Ok so if this is a good crankbait rod, what type of Cranks? Shallow/Med/Deep? What would be a good Senko/fluke, tube, and weightless worm rod? Thanks for all the input. I think i'm going to go get it in the next couple of days. Now i have another question, Should i keep a 5:3.1 reel or get something alittle faster for Cranks? Quote

It will work for all of them. A good plastics rod would be 7' MH Fast. 5.3:1 is perfect for crankbaits, I use a 5.0:1 and it works great. Quote

Now i have another question, Should i keep a 5:3.1 reel or get something alittle faster for Cranks? It's a good rod for shallow and medium cranks, it's not a deep crank rod at all, it doesn't have anything close to enough power in the butt to fish big, deep cranks. A good "all around rod" is a 7' MH Fast, plastics, jigs, blades, even squarebills if you're hard pressed, can be fished on it. I personally don't have any 5:1 reels on crank rods, the lowest I have is 6.4:1. Some people really like them, but I'd rather have the 6.4 personally. Quote
Big Stick Joe Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 Ok thanks guys. I have a 7' MH fast rod at home that i will use my plastics on. Now with the rod i first asked about, besides it being a good shallow/med cranking rod, would it be a good spinnerbait rod as well or would i want to stick with the 7' MH fast rod for that? Quote

It will work fine with most treble hook lures. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted August 23, 2011 Super User Posted August 23, 2011 Shimano Med-Fast is more like a moderate. So this would be a crankbait rod. i have a lot of Shimano rods and ive had the opposite. M/F is more like a Fast. and thats all of their rods, especially the Cumara. Quote

It's quite flexible to the butt of the rod, it's not very fast at all. Quote
Big Stick Joe Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 ok so thank you everyone for your comments. Now that i've read everything, i want to lay out my setup and get your guys comments or improvements 1st: Shimano Clarus 7' MH fast--shallow Spinnerbait. 5.3:1 with 17 lb test 2nd: Shimano Clarus 7' M fast taper--Shaky head/dropshot. 6.2:1 with 14 lb test 3rd: Shimano ??? 6'6 med fast--Topwater. 5.3:1 with 14 lb test 4th: Pinnacle Bunner 6'6 med power but i don't know the action. i think it is a med action--crankbaits. 6.2:1 with 10 lb test but will be replaced due to low line, just don't know what size line i will put on there Let me know what you think.
