bugman Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 My dad and I are headed up to the Burt Lake area Sept 22nd for a little smallie fishing. We know the area well but have not fished the lakes much. We would appriciate any advice for the fall smallie bite. We plan on fishing Burt, Mullet, Black and crooket lakes. Any other lakes or info you can suggest please let me know. Quote

Fish the rocky points on the eastern shores of both Burt & Mullett, and work the sunken islands on Mullett too. Mullett has been overrun with gobies recently, so you should know which baits work there. Both lakes have a good population of perch which is also a good forage base. If you happen to catch any walleye, look to see if they are tagged. Some tags are worth a few greenbacks when they are turned in. Quote

bugman Posted October 13, 2011 Author Posted October 13, 2011 You were right about a tourny on Burt/Mullet. Lake Drive Classic held a 47 boat tourny the weekend we were there. The weather was nice about 65 and partly sunny. My dad and I decided to fish Crooked Lake to keep away from the Tourny. We did pretty good, landing some nice smallies between 3.5 and 5 lbs. We also caught a few pike, walleye and perch. The next day we fished Burt/Mullet and only landed 4 smallies but all were keepers in the 4 lbs range. Big fish for the tourny was a huge 7.27 lbs smallie. Sure would like to see her in the spring with a pound and a half of eggs in her belly. The funny thing was even with the 47 boat tourny we felt like we had the lake to our self. Both Burt and Mullet are huge lakes and can support countless boats. Not many locals smallie fish, mostly fish for walleyes and perch. I recommend trying these lakes if you get the chance. Many rocky points and flats to hold smallies. May have to give the spawn a try this comming spring. Lund EX, you were right about the gobys. The winning bait in the tourny was the poor boy dixie darter. Great goby style bait. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted October 16, 2011 Super User Posted October 16, 2011 Happy to hear you got into a few of those brownies. You also got some pretty decent weather. Our annual fall trip starts this evening, and the weather isn't anywhere close to what you guys enjoyed. That isn't all that strange though as I seem to always make it up there when the combination of cold air and wind kicks up the lake effect rain/sleet/snow machine. Unfortunately, you're exactly correct in the fact that the locals up there mainly target the walleyes and perch. That's who I will be fishing with on my trip, so most of my time on the water will be spent dragging cranks for walter or drifting mud flats for perch. Not that I don't enjoy that kind of fishing when it produces a few meals of good eating fillets. I'm already planning on rigging up one rod with a trolling spoon to long line behind the boat on the chance I might run into one of those landlocked steelhead that live in those lakes. As far as bass fishing goes, I have warned the kids that the old man is going to play the "It's my Boat" card a couple of days so that I can break out the bass baits! I'd really like to see what my North Star spinnerbaits might get me, as this colder weather should be just the ticket for type of fishing. Quote

Anyone headed up to those lakes can look forward to using gobie style baits on both lakes. Quote
