brushhoggin Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Well I stuck my foot in my mouth and talked up Scum Frogs (mainly the Scum Dog Walker) a while back on here, but after fishing with them for a couple years, I've decided to go back to Spro or even Koppers if they walk right. Here's why. Spro frogs walk like a champ. It's almost effortless once you understand how to do it. However, all their colors are either too fluorescent or too dark. Yeah yeah i know....dark is good at times, but i like a frog with a light colored belly and natural color top. I don't care if its not as detailed as a Koppers, i just want it to look natural at first glance. not like some crazy, African death tree frog..... which is what most of them look like. Koppers makes a frog that looks way more like frogs I've seen hopping around on the banks of creeks, ponds, and lakes of Mississippi growing up as a kid. And I know many of you elder anglers on here do not support the match-the-hatch theory, but with a relatively slow-moving bait, it's where I'd like to invest a bit of confidence. MAIN QUESTION. Do you guys who can walk the dog with a hollowbody frog while blindfolded, think that these frogs walk as easily as a Spro? Thanks in advance. Clay Quote
hatrix Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I have both koppers and spro and I wold say the spro walks better but koppers walks good to. I like the koppers better because its softer and I seem to get more hook sets with it. I cut about 1" off of the legs to help my frogs walk a little better and I dont have any complaints yet about the koppers. I would say 90% of my bites when frogging come while it is sitting on the pause so it doesn't really seem to matter so much where I fish. Maybe if you constantly walk it 100% of the time a spro might be better. I mainly go about 1-2' at a time and pause or pause when I hit open pockets. 1 Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted August 19, 2011 Super User Posted August 19, 2011 I think they walk the same. You may have to snap the koppers just a tad harder since it is a fatter bait. What i do like about the koppers is it has a better "chugging" action in my opinion. Walking is not the end all technique all the time. Quote
brushhoggin Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 well no it wouldn't be walking all the time. but a lot of the time. the spro gets going with one twitch of the rod tip. i was hoping the Koppers behaved similarly . thanks for the reply Quote
endless Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 They claim you don't have to trim the legs on Koppers but I kind of think I might on mine. I had a hard time walking it actually did better with rod tip up. But recently I've beem getting better at walking my Spro65 after I trimmed legs so next time might try the Kopper again before doing anything to the legs. I might needed more practice. Here is the one I got. The Evolve might be another to look at. Hooligan spoke pretty good on them so next time I might order me the Ghost. Here was the post we had on the Evolve Nervous Walking frog. Here is the Evolve Nervous Walker frog Ghost http://www.***.com/Evolve_Nervous_Walker_Frog/descpage-VNWF.html Quote

hatrix Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I trim both of them. I think they make the legs to long on frogs and sometimes the bass will grab there legs and pull them down so its impossible to catch them. Quote
Packard Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Neither of them are ideal for walking but the SPRO is easier for me. I can walk my Bobby's perfect frog better than both of them. Quote

On the Kopper did it make a difference or can you tell if it did? I thought about trimming mine. Quote
Stinkus Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 On the Kopper did it make a difference or can you tell if it did? I thought about trimming mine. I have both the Spro and Koppers too. For me it is hands down the Koppers Frog. They just look so much more realistic and they sit better in the water. I have been using the same black/Brown frog all season and have caught dozens of fish on it. It's beat up, but, there are no tears and it floats like new. As far as trimming the legs, I have not done that. Not sure if I will. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 I prefer the Koppers Frog, but I do think the spro walks easier/better. The Koppers action is more of a bobbing/corking kind of walk where the frog looks like its trying to leap out of the water, the spro walk seems more traditional. I like the kopper walk style around the bank, pads, or floating scum, I use the spro more in open water. I don't trim the skirt legs anymore, I always end up trimming too much and ruin the bait. hatrix Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Avalon did kinda of nail it on the koppers it sorta sits a little higher then a spro its like nose up in the water. As for trimming the legs though I guess maybe it walks easier but I do it because I have watched to many fish just grab the legs and pull the bait down. Quote
dhami013 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 I've done so well with my Spro frogs I haven't felt the need to try another brand. Plus where I buy my baits they have a plethora of shapes and sizes for Spro. Take 1" off the legs of the Spro and you're steady walking. I have 3 of them. Green and yellow, natural red, and the black and red popper. I've caught a lot of big fish on all of them. And with those colors I can usually get a topwater bite all day. Their hooks are phenom and have an excellent hook up ratio if you know when to set the hook. For a year I set the hook too soon and didn't set it correctly. I'm a heavy Spro supporter, not that you could tell. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Spros beat Koppers every time. I have used both of them, and the Spros are more durable, walk better, are better constructed, and higher in quality. You do have to trim the Koppers legs, and it rolls way to much side to side for my preferences.... It also gets wrapped up more. I have used Snag Proofs, Scum Frogs, Koppers, Spros, Etc. and the Spros beat them all. Quote
brushhoggin Posted September 3, 2011 Author Posted September 3, 2011 got my bobbys perfect frogs in the mail and caught my personal best this morning. 7.6 pounder! Caught her in some sparse grass next to a thick mat, just kinda gently scootin' it from one tuft of grass to the next. then i got a couple 3's and a 4 pound bass walkin this frog. Hey nice call Packard, this frog walks very effortlessly. can't say it's better than a spro but it's definitely equal. not once did i squeeze out water but after that first fish, it took me a sec to put it back together cause the rings that connect the line tie to the hook were all the way out and the frog itself was all scrunched up. but i got it back together and destroyed 3 more nice fish. still had to tinker with it after every fish to get the hook back inside but i love how soft these things are.
