Favorite Ultralight Baits And Rigs

Does anyone else here fish ultralight gear? If so what are your preferences?

I do mainly for trout or to catch bait for catfishing. For the trout I fish spinners, spoons, and small jigs. For catching bait it's hard to beat a 2" grub on a 1/32oz jighead. Little tiny cranks are a lot of fun to take to a pond and just see what you can catch. With my ultralight even a 8 inch bass feels like a giant!

I actually caught about an 8 inch bass, maybe a 9 tonight on my UL on a live mosquitofish and slip float rig. I threw it out and was talkin to my friend and didn't even know something was on until I pulled in a little slack. Felt like a nice crappie or bluegill. It's always fun fishing for anything that'll bite, just to add a little suspense .

UL for trout. I like 1/32 darter heads with a 3" trout worm or even 1/64th with a tiny grub on it. Also thomas buoyants, kastmasters, Panther martin spinners.

Of course. truer to the meaning with 4lb line, a 500 size reel, with a 5' ultralight rod.

Trout, Bass, Crappie, Perch being caught on downsized lures, largest trout and bass to date have been in the 4lb range, with the most memorable fights.

I like the small Strike King crankbaits. They even make suspending ones. But I also like to use my ultralight to fish 3" and 4" worms wacky style. I've caught several nice bass (between 3 and 6 pounds) that way. Now THAT can be some fun!!!

it's hard to beat a 2" grub on a 1/32oz jighead.

That's like the best pond baits I have ever used. I will usually use a 1/16 or 1/8 head though and a 2" white grub. It will catch any thing big or small. Ive have caught several 5# or better on them when I was a kid.

I use the Pflueger President 6720 on a St Croix Premier 4'6" UL Mod action rod and lately been tossing Strike King Bitsy Minnow. The Bitsy Minnow is rated at 1/8oz =.125 but all 6 of the ones I have are lighter around .082-.086oz yet they toss pretty far. Would love to get one that actually weighed 1/8oz get oustanding distance.

I love the bitsy pond minnows by Strike King! Something fun to do with em is to wait til all the big "BULL"gill are spawning, and cast it right over their beds and crank it in. The fight from a massive bluegill is great on an Ultralight.

I fished UL almost exclusively for a few years until I got into topwater frogging a few years ago. Inline spinners are my favorite UL baits by a lot. You can catch about any species and any size of fish on them from 4" bass fingerlings to 8+ lb catfish. I don't use it much anymore, but I always carry my UL setup for those days when I can't buy a bite. If they aren't biting the inline spinner, then it's time to enjoy the scenery or go home.

What kind of in-line spinners do you use? I have some Roostertails and Blue Fox inlines. Also, do you use Beetle Spins? I've got a few 1/32 oz waiting to be opened.

Does anyone fish with in-line spinners or Beetle Spins?

I used to fish Roostertails a lot and they catch a ton of fish but they don't spin quite as reliably as some others. A quick pop at the beginning of your retrieve will usually get things spinning. I didn't use Blue Fox spinners quite as much but they do work well. Beetlespins are just as effective as any.

The inline I have used exclusively the last few years is the one made by Terminator. The ones I own have a dressed treble-hook. You can also get the same spinner but it has a single-hook and grub and is sold as a weedless bait (at twice the cost). This is a fish-catching beast and on an ultralight it can be cast for pretty good distance. Inlines and especially the Terminator will probably always be my "if all else fails" bait.

I love Beetle Spins because they're a catch-anything type of bait. I have a few 1/8 and 1/16 oz ones and a handful of 1/32 oz Beetle Spins. From now on I'll probably just stick with buying 1/16 and 1/32 oz ones because they're the most effective for an Ultra Light. I just like them because they're so versatile and there are so many color choices, and they're only around a buck a piece. Can't beat that!
